GI/Sterile Processing Department Tech

Provides assistive patient care in the GI Lab under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. This

position serves the following patient age categories pediatrics, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Level II

is a Certified Surgical Technologist who has met all of Level II criteria, demonstrates leadership

abilities, and is involved in staff education and committee’s acting as a liaison between all members of

the multi-disciplinary team. Considered a campus resource (constantly seeks out opportunity for

improvement-service specific).

Works in sterile processing and performs duties to include but not limited to decontamination of surgical instruments by manually washing/debriding instruments, packaging, wrapping and sterilizing instrument trays/peelk packs, etc. Utilizing T-doc for managing tray inventory.

Working Conditions Has efficient endurance to perform tasks over long periods of time. Involves

exposure to blood/body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases. Participates in creating

a safety culture by optimizing safety at all times.

Physical Requirements Able to access entire facility; lift, transport patients, supplies and equipment.

Demonstrates manual dexterity, hearing acuity, and verbal ability. Displays ability for standing longperiods of time, walking, lifting, bending, and stooping for the majority of the workday.

Position Specific Competencies

  • Assists with Surgical/Endoscopy Process.
  • Anticipates specific instruments, checks equipment, and obtains supplies for upcoming schedule.
  • Maintains asepsis throughout procedure; identifies and corrects breaks in technique.
  • Demonstrates and educates principles of anatomy and physiology as related to basic and complex


procedures.

  • Demonstrates and educates safety practices as related to sharps, positioning, specimens, and Electrical


Surgical Units & Plan education for peer group.

  • Contributes to unit operations. Identifies and makes changes to preference lists.
  • Recognizes and actively participates in quality assurance and improvement activities.
  • Willingness to go to other specialties to broaden knowledge base.
  • Records peer group competencies.
  • Demonstrates professional accountability. Plans and teaches campus specific specialty competencies.
  • Coaches’ surgical team on the importance of universal precautions. Monitors, coaches, and holds others


accountable to the dress code.

  • Holds peers accountable to departmental objectives.
  • Completes mandatory requirements to include obtaining 20 CEUs a year.
  • Planning and Implementation of patient care.
  • Observes patient, alerts surgical team to symptoms, reactions, and changes in patient condition, and


coaches others to recognize status changes.

  • Assists the RN with selected patient care interventions in a manner that is consistent with policies and


procedures and offering coaching to new members of the surgical team.

  • Consults physicians and acts upon needs/requirements preoperatively and postoperatively. ***within


scope of practice***

  • Completes assigned task and without prompting, seeks other departmental needs.
  • Educates peer group.
  • Uses appropriate safety and infection control measures.
  • Performs cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes per policy.
  • Performs cleaning and disinfection of ancillary equipment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in reprocessing endoscopes and equipment.
  • Reports/records information correctly.
  • Accurately records data in appropriate logs.
  • Reports malfunctioning/equipment to leadership.
  • Effectively reports endoscope failures or needed repairs to leadership.
  • Effectively communicates information regarding scope repairs or loaners.


The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the

Essential Functions Of This Position.

Education/formal training/licensure/certification experience

  • Graduate of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technology


OR

  • Graduate of a training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, or Air


Force.

And

  • Certified Surgical Technologist current and maintains Certification throughout employment.
  • Minimum 2 years OR and/or Endoscopy experience preferred not required.
  • BCLS
