You use signal flags to work with the traffic patterns and ensure the safety of the other construction workers. Communication skills are crucial, as you must coordinate with the rest of the team. A certified flagger's job is to direct traffic and protect people and property at work zones.

Primary Duties
- Use hand signals and signs to direct traffic around construction sites. This includes placing signs like "Road Work Ahead" and "Road Closed"
- Inform drivers of detours and other traffic information. Also communicate with other flaggers and construction workers to coordinate traffic and keep workers safe
- Put up barricades, traffic cones, and warning signs at the start of a project and take them down when the job is done
- Help the construction crew remove debris and rubble from the road
- Warn workers of dangerous traffic situations so they can avoid injury
- Strictly follow safety regulations and be willing to work in all weather conditions
- Using hand signals and direction signs to direct traffic around road construction sites.
- Communicating with other flaggers using hand-held radios to direct two-way traffic onto a single lane
- Informing the construction crew of any traffic issues that may affect their safety
- Appropriately positioning warning and detour signs around construction sites
- Setting up barricades and traffic cones along construction sites to cordon off certain areas
- Removing all signs, barricades, and traffic cones upon completion of construction work
- Assisting the construction crew in the removal of rubble, debris, and hazardous materials
- Recording the license plate numbers of motorists who neglect to obey traffic signs and directions
- Follows daily procedures and protocols set forth in job orientations and training
- Perform general flagging duties as required or directed by supervisor
- Report defects or repairs as necessary to supervisor
- Individuals must be able to lift objects weighing 80 lb. on a regular basis
- The use of a shovel to move material will be necessary
- Perform all duties within safety guidelines set up by M.S.H.A. and company policy
- Perform pre-shift inspections on jobsite prior to startup
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Applicants must be certified as a flagger/flagman and have experience with flagging/traffic control on highway projects.
- Certification through the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) If certificate has expired or not previous certified, company will provide training
- Proven experience working as a flagger
- Sound knowledge of state traffic regulations
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and physical is required
- OSHA is required - company will provide training
- The ability to stand for extended periods
- The ability to work as part of a team
- The ability to work in harsh weather conditions
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional observation skills
- Effective communication skills
