General Summary:
Manages individualized, goal directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Systematically assesses each patient and develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care that is implemented to achieve optimal patient outcomes as the patient progresses through the perianesthesia phase of care.
- Demonstrates the skills and judgement necessary to implement the medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.
- Maintains up to date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, in order to ensure quality care.
- Demonstrates knowledge for administering and recording of medications, can also demonstrate knowledge of commonly used medications: action, dose and side effects.
- Appropriately recognizes patients risk factors for perioperative hypothermia and implements warming measures.
- Demonstrates routine assessments for PONV and implements appropriate rescue treatments.
- Able to perform a comprehensive pain assessment using appropriate pain scales and use both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods to control pain.
- Demonstrates proper skills related to airway management.
- Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation and follow through with appropriate intervention.
- Demonstrates knowledge in the assessment and care rom the pediatric to geriatric population and their family/caregiver.
- Provides for the safe transfer of care with a communication handoff to the next phase of care.
- Functions as a role model for current and new staff.
- Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development.

- CHARGE: Coordinates daily schedule according to department policies and procedures to maximize patient flow and efficiency.
- CHARGE: Completes nurse leader rounding as directed by the Department Manager.
