District Code of Character & Conduct Committee Member

  • Starting Date : March 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025
  • Stipend : $30 per hour. All work to be completed by June 30, 2025

Background Information :

The district has been awarded a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education through the Rethinking Discipline Initiative. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's (Department) goal is to assist in the reduction of inappropriate or excessive use of long-term suspension and expulsion, including disparate rates of suspension and expulsion for students with disabilities and / or for students of color.

The district's current policies, procedures, and protocols related to challenging student behavior and disciplinary protocols (including suspensions & other exclusionary discipline) are in need of recalibration, realignment to current best practices (an emphasis on restorative practices and preventative, skill-building supportive interventions), as well as increased training and support for administrators who are making disciplinary decisions.

Members of the District Code of Character & Conduct Committee will participate in in-person professional development sessions focused on learning and developing skill sets to implement restorative practices (see Meetings #1-3 below). Members of this committee will also participate in virtual meetings (see Meetings #4-6 below) to discuss recommended edits to FPS Code of Conduct, receiving feedback, suggestions, and planning out strategic engagement of stakeholders (other staff, students, and families).

Job Qualifications :

  • Current Fitchburg Public Schools employee
  • Must have an interest in and knowledge of practices, supports, and interventions that promote positive behavior, help students develop self-discipline and social-emotional efficacy, and enable students to improve and correct behaviors
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to maintain effective and professional collegial relationships.

  • Meeting #1 : March 4, 2025 3 : 00 - 5 : 00 PM (2 hours, in-person)
  • Meeting #2 : April 7, 2025 3 : 00 - 5 : 00 PM (2 hours in-person)
  • Meeting #3 : May 5, 2025 3 : 00 - 5 : 00 PM (2 hours in-person)
  • Meeting #4 : May 19, 2025 3 : 00 - 4 : 30 PM (1.5 hours, virtual)
  • Meeting #5 : June 2, 20253 : 00 - 4 : 30 PM (1.5 hours, virtual)
  • Meeting #6 : June 16, 2025 3 : 00 - 4 : 30 PM (1.5 hours, virtual)
  • Participate in 3 professional development sessions (Meetings #1-3), in-person, focused on learning and developing skill sets to implement restorative practices.
  • Participate in 3 virtual sessions (Meetings #4-6) to discuss recommended edits to FPS Code of Conduct, receiving feedback, suggestions, and planning out strategic engagement of stakeholders (other staff, students, and families).
  • Implements the district's mission, philosophy of education, and instructional standards and objectives.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence especially as relates to the specific assignment.
  • Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.
