Seeking multiple individuals to serve as dynamic and committed Residential Counselors/Mentors during a Summer Residential program at Fitchburg State University. This six-week position includes one training week and five weeks of 24-hour supervision of 60 high school youth in a residential setting (Mon - Fri). (Program staff required to live residentially on the FSU campus).
Upward Bound is a year-round, college readiness program funded by the Department of Education and sponsored by Fitchburg State University since 1989. The program stresses academic development, serving high school students in Fitchburg and Leominster for the duration of their high school career and beyond. Eligibility is based on first-generation college status, family income, and academic motivation.
During Summer Academy, Upward Bound students take part in a five-week residential program. Students live on campus Monday through Friday at Fitchburg State University and take academic courses to better prepare them for college. In addition, students attend academic enrichment courses, volunteer at community work sites, and participate in a variety of recreational and cultural activities.
Principal Duties include:
- Actively work with staff in implementation, supervision, and support of youth in all phases of programming and residential activities
- Supervise and assist 12-15 students and Instructor during afternoon Project Group activities, as scheduled
- Mentor and advise student participants in their pursuit of post-secondary education (college)
- Plan and supervise evening recreational activities
- Supervise and maintain order among youth at all times
- Attend all staff meetings and maintain required records
- Preference given to licensed drivers willing/able to drive youth in a 15-passenger van
Job Requirements:
- Successful completion of 1 year / 30 college credit hours
- Recommended GPA 2.8 (transcript required)
- Strong leadership abilities and interpersonal communication skills required
- Tutoring experience is strongly considered
- Experience with youth programs and summer camps preferred
- Sensitivity to the needs of low-income and first-generation college populations
- Ability to work in a team setting
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check) and a SORI

- Mondays - Thursdays: 1:00pm - 5:30pm; 6:30pm - 10:00pm
- Fridays: (Field Trips) 8:00am - 12:00pm; 1:00pm - 5:00pm
July 28 - July 31: Special Events / Field Trips (as scheduled)*
August 1: Staff move out
Residential Counselors / Mentors earn a salary of $4000, paid in bi-weekly installments. In addition, housing and a modified meal plan are provided for the full duration of the employment term (approximate value: $2,680). Meals are not provided on the weekends or when the program is closed (July 3 and 4).
