Position Overview

We would like to hire construction Apprentices in carpentry, masonry, and roofing disciplines.

Fitzgerald’s Heavy Timber Construction Inc. (FHTC) is looking for applicants with a long-term interest in a construction career and dedication to learning a trade.

In some companies this position might be called “Helper” or “Construction Laborer.” However, we need employees that view their job as apprenticeships as we will teach you a skillset in an area such as timber framing, carpentry, roofing, or masonry. We expect dedication, punctuality, physical application, and mental application to your work. In exchange we will pay a competitive wage and teach you lifelong skills.

Company Overview

FHTC is a timber building restoration firm based in Thurmont, MD. Our core business is the restoration and new construction of structural landmarks, utilizing traditional techniques and solutions in heavy timber framing.

Our portfolio of projects includes converting barns into homes, shops, schools and places of business. We have also replaced countless roofs with double locking standing seam metal roofing and repaired or replaced wood and slate shingles. Job Description

Individuals will be responsible for assisting the foreman, skilled workers, and occasionally moving from crew to crew as work requires. This position has good advancement opportunities depending on your commitment to learning and meeting all position duties.

Fundamental Job Duties

For the Carpentry/Timber Frame Focused Apprentice

· Assist carpenters with fabrication of timber components

· Assist with installation of siding, flooring, timber frame elements

· Assist with the installation of roofing (metal, slate, and wood shingle)

· Assist the sawyer with timber milling and logging

For the Roofing Focused Apprentice

· Remove old roofing materials

· Assist with roof carpentry repairs

· Assist with the installation of wood shingles, standing seam metal roofing, or slate

· Assist skilled workers and learn techniques to fabricate, solder and install flashings of all type that are made from galvanized, copper and other metal materials as needed.

For the Masonry Focused Apprentice

· Demolish old masonry

· Sort and gather stone, brick, or block for erection

· Mix mortar and transport it to the masons

· Assist with masonry assembly

· Clean tools promptly

For All Apprentices

· Use pneumatic powered equipment, power tools, saws, grinders, and hand tools

· Erect scaffolding, shoring, braces, set ladders, trestles, handrails, decks, platforms, and gangways

· Keep job site clean and pick up/discard scrap and debris at the end of each workday

· Assist other crew members with the overall construction duties

· Follow safety rules, job site safety plans and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

· Be proactive and take the initiative

· Continuously communicate with coworkers about new task assignments and questions

Prerequisites

· 2 years of construction experience helpful but not required

· An understanding of construction site operations and general workflow

· Experience with various hand and power tools

· High school diploma or higher preferred but not required

· Ability to drive to and from job sites

· A demonstrated desire to learn

· A history of reliable performance

· Able to safely lift 70 or more pounds and participate in site clean-up

· Will be required to own a set of tools and PPE required for general job duties. Specialized tools will be provided
