Qualifications
JOB SUMMARY
The Librarian position reports to the Regional Superintendent of Northern California and is accountable for in-custody and community library services for Five Keys.
We are looking for someone who insists on maintaining a positive attitude and enjoys supporting a diverse group of people. This job is for you if you are bilingual in English and Spanish. If this job is for you, you have exceptional interpersonal skills and are patient and caring. You also have the ability to adapt and be flexible. Additionally, you have an understanding of the importance of education in lowering the rate of recidivism.
This full-time, temporary position is 60% funded by the Public Education Enrichment Fund grant. At this expiration, the grant and position will be re-evaluated based on the organization's needs. This position supports multiple sites and counties in the Northern California Region, including but not limited to San Francisco and San Bruno, CA. The scheduled hours vary between 7:00 am - 8:00 pm.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Help library patrons conduct research, find books and information they need
- Instruct small groups (5-7 students) and classes (up to 25 students) regarding information, resources and help users evaluate search results
- Organize library materials so they are easy to find, maintain book collections and a neat & orderly library
- Plan programs for different audiences, such as book club and educational activities
- Develop an index database of library materials, create a system for the distribution, collection and tracking of library books in a correctional facility
- Research new culturally relevant books and materials, by reading book reviews, publishers’ announcements, and catalogs
- Choose and order new books and other materials for the library with a focus on culturally relevant materials
- Communicate and coordinate with principals and teachers in-order to create a rotating schedule for library visits within the education corridor and classroom visits at community sites, including visits to ESL specific classrooms and sites.
- Provide focused literacy supports to families, including classes on literacy in the community setting
- Create a secondary option of book requests and delivery to students within the corridor, if a visit to the library is not an option for them
- Curate book collections/displays at community sites/classrooms on a rotating basis
- Work with teachers to provide students with supplementary reading materials related to the curriculum
- Plan and coordinate events and field trips for students related to literacy
- Other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Advanced proficiency in Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and databases
- Able to maintain strict confidentiality and take all precautions when handling sensitive information
- Ability to maintain strong and appropriate boundaries with personal identifying information when interacting with students or community or program partners, and while at any school location or community or program partner site
- Exceptional written communication skills; ability to express complex ideas with clarity and precision in written documents
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficient required
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Previous teaching experience preferred
- Experience working with a diverse student population, including multilingual learners
- Librarian certification OR
- Experience in Librarian Services or related services
- Previous experience working in custody preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequent talking and hearing conversations
- Long periods of walking, sitting at a desk and/or computer station
- Lifting items that weigh up to 25 lbs.; reaching, bending, carrying and stooping within the daily routine of tasks and activities
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is contingent upon:
- Satisfactory results of a Live Scan (criminal background investigation)
- Successfully obtaining jail clearance for positions working in county jails or probation locations
- Submitting proof of clear TB results. Results dated within 60 days prior to hire date are acceptable
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Moderate to high noise level
- Work environment varies from site to site
- Some personal safety risk working in underserved communities
- Must be willing and able to work in a correctional facility, travel throughout the area to community sites, and travel state-wide to various locations or meetings as needed
- Up to 60% travel to Five Keys locations throughout California as needed
