What are the responsibilities and job description for the Law Enforcement Ranger (Lateral & Entry Level) position at Five Rivers MetroParks?
This is primarily a law enforcement position. Rangers patrol park properties, levees, bikeways, and conservation areas enforcing State of Ohio laws and the Rules & Regulations of Five Rivers MetroParks. Takes appropriate action to prevent crime, apprehend criminals, maintain safety for the public and staff, conduct search and rescue, and assist park visitors in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations.

- Protects the public and property and enforces park regulations and State laws. Apprehends violators of laws or regulations, and issues warnings, citations, or evicts. Makes arrests. Completes police reports and provides court testimony.
- Provides service and maintains effective relationships with the visiting public. Answers visitor questions, aids, gives directions, and provides other assistance as needed to encourage the visitors’ enjoyment of the parks, and to ensure their security and safety.
- Patrol areas on foot or by cruiser, boat, ATV, or bicycle to maintain a visible presence that promotes public safety and services, including deterring criminal activity, fires, and other incidents that could disrupt the peaceful use of the park by visitors. Checks facilities for safety problems and secures areas at closing time.
- Responds promptly to accidents and other emergencies. Directs or participates in first aid and rescue activities, or personally administers first-aid, including CPR and AED.
- Directs traffic and enforces park traffic regulations to facilitate traffic safety.
- Assists in controlling/capturing both domestic and wild animals in and around the parks that may pose a risk to the visiting public.
- Handles lost and found property in accordance with policy.
- Escorts employees carrying cash, or personally delivers money to and from banks.
- Maintains confidentiality of confidential or sensitive records and information.
- Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance, and works outside of normal schedule as required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides service to the public, responding to questions, helping, and providing information.
- Collaborates internally, within and across departmental boundaries, to provide information and service to others in the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the agency and all staff.
- Cleans ranger vehicles and assists in maintaining the Ranger Headquarters.
- Attends meetings and training sessions.
- Performs various public relations activities. May coordinate OVI checkpoints and prevention activities.
- Occasionally may conduct educational programs on-site and at schools, speaks to civic and other groups, participate in parades, staff MetroParks promotional displays, and perform other duties that promote the MetroParks and encourage effective public relations.
May serve as “Officer in Charge” in the absence of an on-duty supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A combination of appropriate education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:
- High school degree or GED.
- No significant or serious criminal record and a good driving record.
- Willingness and ability to frequently work an irregular work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Certification.
Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) Operator Certification.
Valid Driver License which meets Five Rivers MetroParks’ insurance carrier guidelines.
In addition to entry level applicants, lateral transfers will be considered, with the wage determined by the Human Resources Department.
Candidates must successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening test prior to employment.
