Job Overview:
Lineman – Overhead Powerlines is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical power distribution systems. This role requires working at heights, using specialized equipment, and adhering to safety standards to ensure the efficient and safe delivery of electricity.
General Requirements:
Installation and Maintenance:
- Construct, install, and maintain overhead power lines, poles, transformers, and other electrical infrastructure.
- Perform routine inspections to identify and repair defects or potential issues in powerlines and related equipment.
Troubleshooting and Repair:
- Respond to power outages and emergency situations to restore electricity efficiently.
- Diagnose and resolve issues in overhead distribution systems, including replacing damaged wires, poles, or transformers.
Safety Compliance:
- Follow all safety regulations, including lockout/tagout procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and OSHA standards.
- Conduct pre- and post-job safety briefings with team members to ensure a safe work environment.
Equipment Operation:
- Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other heavy equipment required for overhead powerline work.
- Use specialized tools such as hydraulic presses, crimpers, and wire tensioners.
Documentation and Communication:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatchers, and team members regarding work status and site conditions.
Training and Mentorship:
- Train and mentor apprentice linemen, ensuring proper techniques and safety protocols are followed.
- Stay updated on industry best practices and advancements in powerline technology.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited lineman apprenticeship program preferred.
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is highly desirable.
- OSHA 10/30 certification is an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in overhead powerline construction, maintenance, or repair.
- Familiarity with working on energized and de-energized lines.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, including transformers, insulators, and switchgear.
- Proficiency in using climbing gear, rigging equipment, and powerline tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions.
- Physically fit to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials and equipment.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and on-call shifts as needed.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Exposure to high voltage and potential hazards; adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.
- Travel to various job sites within the service area.
