Job Title: Emergency Department Peer Advocate

Job Summary:
The Emergency Department Peer Advocate is responsible for providing real-time, non-clinical peer support to patients who screen positive for substance use disorders (SUD) in the Emergency Department. This role involves delivering crisis support, advocacy, and recovery guidance to children, adults, and families, while assisting them in navigating the healthcare system and accessing necessary treatment services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Completion of NY State-certified Peer Support Specialist training through OMH or OASAS.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation, including overnight coverage.
- Certification:
- Tier 1: Must participate in the initial peer certification training and obtain CRPA-P within 4
- months of employment.
- Tier 2: Certification as a CRPA-P or CRPA.
- Lived experience with substance use disorders and/or mental health recovery is required.
Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal abilities with a compassionate approach to working with diverse individuals, staff, and community service providers.
- Ability to multitask, effectively problem-solve, and manage time in high-pressure or crisis situations.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation and electronic health records (EHR).
- Demonstrated commitment to peer support and recovery advocacy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide immediate peer support to patients who screen positive for SUD in the Emergency Department, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Offer individual, family, and group advocacy, empowerment, and recovery support services.
- Assist clients in navigating the healthcare system and accessing treatment services related to substance use disorders.
- Utilize engagement strategies, including crisis intervention, safety planning, and resource brokering to support clients' recovery processes.
- Serve as a role model by sharing your personal recovery experience and teaching effective coping strategies and self-help techniques.
- Collaborate with the treatment team, participating in interdisciplinary meetings and care conferences.
- If not on-site during a positive SUD screen, follow up with the patient within 24 hours to ensure continuity of support.
- Maintain accurate documentation and tracking of referrals, interventions, and patient outcomes.
- Participate in required training courses to maintain certification and stay current with best practices.
- Provide on-call support as part of the rotation schedule.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support program objectives and incident management.
