Position Summary

Skilled work in the operation of moderately complex Public Works or sanitation equipment.  Duties include performance of manual laboring tasks.

 Essential Functions

  • The employee normally operates one or more of the following pieces of equipment on a regular basis: Motor grader, excavator, backhoe, bulldozer, front-end loader, large trucks, boom trucks, and/or other similar equipment.
  • Occasionally operates smaller equipment such as tractors with mowers/other attachments, trimmers, weed eaters, chainsaws, etc.
  • Washes, cleans and gives routine first echelon maintenance to the equipment.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned such as pothole patching, shoulder repair, ditch cleaning, tree trimming, bridge repair, headwall construction and other duties.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Occasionally operates a pipe laser and a rotary self-leveling laser.
  • During emergencies, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 5-years experience in the operation and routine maintenance of the type of equipment of primary assignment.
  • Must have a valid Class ‘B’ or higher Commercial driver’s license without air-brake restriction (L or Z) as designated by the State of Florida.
  • Must obtain a valid Class ‘A’ Commercial driver’s license without air-brake restriction (L or Z) as designated by the State of Florida within one-year of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation of medium and heavy Public Works equipment.
  • Knowledge of the component parts and maintenance needs of the equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic regulations governing the use of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved.
  • Ability to service equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skilled in the operation of construction or sanitation equipment.
  • Ability to prepare simple reports.

 Physical Requirements

Physical demand:  Moderate

  • 50 lbs. maximum lifting.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and moving of approximately 50 lbs.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to operate equipment.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to operate equipment over rough terrain.
  • Ability to perform manual labor under adverse weather conditions.

Salary : $44,658 - $60,715
