The Assistant Shelter Manager supports the Shelter Manager in overseeing day-to-day shelter operations, ensuring that all program objectives are met in compliance with FSS policies and regulations. This role assists with supervising staff, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and ensuring high-quality service delivery. The Assistant Shelter Manager is a resourceful team player, skilled in crisis intervention, and committed to maintaining the dignity and well-being of shelter clients.

This position's starting base pay rate is between $23.60 and $26.30 per hour. Starting rate will be dependent on experience alone.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Shelter Manager in supervising Lead Shelter Coordinators and Shelter Coordinators, ensuring adherence to FSS policies and protocols.
- Track onboarding, training, and performance evaluations of team members, fostering a supportive and productive work environment, and report to Shelter Manager on discrepancies and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with leadership duties as needed, maintaining positive, solution-focused interactions with staff, clients, and partners.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and in-service activities, promoting a cohesive approach to shelter operations and client services.
- Communicate and collaborate with the Shelter Manager in writing the staff schedule to ensure adequate coverage for each shift, including publication of the schedule and coordination of scheduling changes.
- Assist with and ensure that daily operations align with shelter standards, including maintaining a safe, clean, and respectful environment.
- Assist with the documentation and quality control of client records and incident reports, following FSS’s confidentiality and data accuracy protocols.
- Engage in crisis intervention and conflict resolution, using de-escalation techniques to maintain a secure environment.
- Provide trauma-informed support to clients, recognizing and appropriately addressing the unique needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, substance use disorders, or other vulnerabilities.
- In the absence of the Shelter Manager, assume responsibility for daily operations of the shelter including, but not limited to, cleanliness, safety and security of the property, ensuring facilities are maintained and that SOPs are followed, providing direct supervision and support for staff and clients.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with FSS’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and relevant state/local regulations.
- Assist the Shelter Manager in enforcing cleanliness and safety protocols throughout the facility, holding staff accountable for consistent standards.
- Support accurate and timely HMIS data entry and reporting by supervising and auditing HMIS data entry from Shelter Coordinators and Lead Shelter Coordinators.
- Assist in scheduling and managing overflow shelter efforts, when necessary.
- Responsible for managing inventory and coordination of the Clothing Closet, purchased and donated items alike.
- Assist with aligning protocols and enforcing policies to ensure safety at FSS. Assist in improving and supporting the initiatives of the operations team.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in human services, ideally within shelter or similar programs.
- Experience or knowledge in supporting individuals facing homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or other crises.
- Experience in management and supervision of a large team.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and conflict de-escalation.
- Proficiency in computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Teams, data entry).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to work collaboratively.
- CPR/First Aid Certification
- Valid Driver’s License
- Food Handler’s Certification
- Strong work ethic under pressure.
- Leadership skills to gain and maintain credibility, trust, and respect of clients and staff.
- Flexible and efficient time management skills.
- The ability to prioritize when in stressful situations.
