Senior Engineer- Manufacturing

Primary Purpose: Provide engineering support to Supply Chain and Manufacturing during the design, procurement, kitting, fabrication, and assembly of electric machines to maximize productivity and quality while minimizing costs.  Serve as a liaison between Operations departments and Design Engineering to maximize design efficiency and expedite support to Operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Evaluate designs produced by Engineering for manufacturability (DFM/DFA) within FLANDERS or their vendors to ensure products can be efficiently and effectively manufactured with the given production constraints.
    • Provide Engineering recommendations of best sourced (availability and price) material options with feedback from Supply Chain and vendor base.
    • Provide Planning team with tools to accurately calculate material usage and order quantities, optimized for minimal scrap. i.e. drops from cut-to-length bars, part-nesting within a layout.
    • Lead projects and process reviews with a cross functional team to identify improvement opportunities to efficiency, productivity and quality. Trial and implement selected process improvements.  This may include developing new techniques, implementing automated systems or utilizing lean principles to achieve improvements.
    • Conduct process capability studies.
    • Provide recommendations of manufacturing equipment selection to implement process improvements. Includes presenting capital requests to leadership for approval.
    • Review and disposition material/part deviations as proposed by Purchasing or Manufacturing.
    • Participate in project kickoff, design review and close out meetings reporting issues/deviations for continuous improvement.
    • Provide written reports for technical issues related to projects.
    • Document concepts, design, testing, and analysis for systems.
    • Provide technical support for other FLANDERS locations and customers.
    • Work within teams on designs, etc. Provide progress and updates as needed.  
    • Execute work in effective and efficient ways to best serve customers and attain corporate goals.
    • Participate in various job-related training opportunities, including technical, operational, and safety topics.
    • Good in communicating technical ideas and terms; communicates well with teammates and project leaders; crisp reporting; excellent written communication including reports, summaries; collaborates well within the team; participates in exchange of ideas and opinions well
    • Key member of Quality cross functional team determining root cause of manufacturing issues.
  • Other
    • Observe all safety procedures and use proper safety equipment including but not limited to eye, ear, and hand protection.
    • Maintain a clean, neat, and safe work environment at all times.
    • Operate and maintain equipment in a safe manner at all times.  
    • Promote strong company image and maintain positive working relationships at all times including professional behavior with customers, Engineers, company leadership, production supervision and employees, and vendors (daily basis).
    • Provide outstanding customer service at all times.
    • Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Process Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and/or direct applicable experience.
  • Experience:
    • Work experience involving mechanical design engineering experience via internships and/or college course work.
    • Knowledgeable and experienced in Lean/Six Sigma methodologies/ tools.
    • Black belt certified a plus.
    • 10 years experience in manufacturing environment.
    • Electric machine manufacturing experience a plus.
  • Other:
    • 3D Modeling Software experience preferred.
    • Experience in a machine shop or mechanical fabrication industry.
    • Great written and verbal communication skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Good organizational skills.
    • Great attention to detail.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Good time management skills with the ability to multitask while coordinating multiple priorities.
    • Strong knowledge of personal computers including Microsoft Office software.
    • Ability to promote a positive company image to customers at all times.
    • Ability to read, write, and comprehend complex written and verbal instructions.
    • Ability to understand, perform, and retain various job related training, operational, and safety procedures.
    • Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and decision making related to non-routine duties.
    • Overnight travel required.
