Summary
The Assistant Principal supports the school principal in leading, coordinating, supervising, and managing school operations and educational programs to ensure an effective learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Support the principal in developing and sustaining an effective educational program that aligns with state and federal requirements, as well as the policies, philosophy, and objectives of the School Board. Engage with students, parents, faculty, and staff while managing records, reports, and documentation.
- Assist in the overall administration of the school by interpreting and enforcing school and district policies and regulations.
- Contribute to fostering a collaborative, results-driven school culture focused on continuous improvement and student achievement.
- Play an active role in developing, implementing, and refining the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan.
- Ensure the implementation of the Board-approved curriculum and instructional framework.
- Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding standardized testing and special education programs.
- Collaborate with the principal in planning and facilitating professional development to support the growth and effectiveness of teachers and staff.
- Serve as acting principal in the principal’s absence.
- Assist in designing and coordinating class schedules, student placements, and extracurricular programming.
- Work with faculty and department heads to develop and manage budget requests.
- Oversee the procurement of instructional materials, technology, and equipment, ensuring accurate inventory and record-keeping.
- Coordinate operational support services, including transportation, custodial care, cafeteria services, and school safety procedures, including emergency drills and inspections.
- Monitor and support student attendance initiatives, ensuring accurate reporting and intervention strategies as needed.
- Assist in maintaining a positive and structured school environment by enforcing disciplinary policies and addressing behavioral concerns as necessary.
- Partner with parents, faculty, and student organizations to enhance educational and extracurricular experiences.
- Organize and maintain school files, records, and required reports.
- Regularly assess student needs and collaborate with school specialists to provide necessary interventions and resources.
- Supervise assigned faculty and departments, ensuring alignment with instructional goals and best practices.
- Communicate and clarify instructional objectives, curriculum expectations, and educational policies to students, teachers, families, and the community.
- Implement a structured system for monitoring and improving instructional practices through classroom observations, learning walks, and feedback sessions.
- Support teachers in evaluating instructional methods, refining lesson planning, and strengthening classroom management strategies.
- Assist in the oversight and coordination of student guidance and counseling services.
- Uphold and model high standards of professionalism, leadership, and ethical conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support school operations and student success.
Qualifications
Postgraduate Professional License with the appropriate endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
Education and/or Experience
Must have a Master's Degree in education administration, three (3) completed years of successful teaching experience. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers and parents.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or the public.
Reasoning/Other Abilities
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Physical Demands
Work involves limited physical tasks and may involve infrequent operation of office equipment. Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a school environment.

Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the School Board policy and administrative regulations. The criteria for the evaluation of job performance are based upon the performance standards established in Section 22.1-253.13:5 (Standard 5) of the Code of Virginia. Sources of data used as evidence of meeting the performance standards will include self-evaluation, informal observations/site visits, documentation log, teacher/staff surveys, and SMART goal setting.
