Job Overview

We are seeking a talented and experienced Head Chef to lead our culinary team in delivering exceptional dining experiences at Flavia’s Cucina Romana. The Head Chef will be responsible for overseeing kitchen operations, menu development, and maintaining the highest standards of food quality and safety. This role requires a passion for Italian cuisine, fine dining, and a commitment to excellence in hospitality.

Duties & Responsibilities

Kitchen Leadership & Operations

  • Lead, train, and mentor the kitchen team, ensuring a positive and productive work environment.
  • Schedule kitchen staff efficiently to meet service demands.
  • Enforce punctuality and station coverage for smooth operations.
  • Foster strong communication between BOH and FOH teams.
  • Maintain a structured, high-functioning kitchen while promoting a motivating and empowering culture.

Food Preparation & Quality Control

  • Develop and implement structured prep systems to optimize consistency and efficiency.
  • Maintain inventory management, systemizing stock, and coordinating with vendors.
  • Ensure all prepped items follow documented standards for consistency and waste reduction.
  • Oversee portion control, plating presentation, and temperature checks before service.
  • Regularly review and update menu items, incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Cost Management & Compliance

  • Monitor and maintain Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) at target levels.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with distributors to ensure cost-efficient purchasing.
  • Ensure full compliance with NJ health codes and sanitation protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience in Kitchen experience leadership role.
  • Strong background in Italian cuisine, particularly Roman-style dishes.
  • Proven ability to manage and develop teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of COGS, inventory management, and cost control.
  • Hands-on leadership approach – this is not just a managerial role.
  • ServSafe Certification (or ability to obtain before start date).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
