What will the Shop Foreman do?

The Shop Foreman will oversee shop operations, ensuring efficient workflow, while providing support to technicians on the floor and assisting service writers with customers documentation and tasks.

What is the Shop Foreman responsible for?

  • Manages the repair and maintenance of company and customer owned equipment to include the organization of yard.
  • Lead employees to meet the department’s expectations for productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment.
  • Perform proficient inspection, diagnosis and moderately complex repair of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform maintenance related work as required.
  • Provide effective performance feedback through performance evaluations, recognition, and/or disciplinary action, with the assistance of General Manager and Human Resources, when necessary.
  • Work with General Manager and Human Resources to interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees.
  • Provide guidance and direction to all staff members assigned to Maintenance of customer owned vehicles and property.
  • Determine schedules and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of equipment, and skill of personnel.
  • Monitor/manage attendance, absenteeism, overtime, and paid time off approvals.
  • Provides training and assistance to staff technicians.
  • Works with equipment vendors to understand the maintenance requirements and capabilities of all equipment.
  • Inspect the quality of outside/supplier repairs and or rebuilds. Assess structural damage and assign needed repairs utilizing the most appropriate method(s).
  • Evaluates equipment after repairs, maintenance, or safety checks.
  • Handles driver complaints regarding equipment condition or operation.
  • Promote safety awareness.
  • Update, maintain and keep organized equipment service records in Karmak system.
  • May assist with creation, updating, and closing work orders.
  • May assist service writers with billing the repair orders to have proper stories, parts and labor amounts.
  • Assist service writers with quotes to customers for repairs to obtain approval to complete the work.
  • Work with sales to evaluate vehicle condition at time of trade.
  • Work closely with the sales department to ensure vehicles are prepared and ready to go at delivery time when sold.
  • Perform other duties assigned as assigned by the General Manager.
  • Maintains a clear line of communication to the General Manager and other staff in the maintenance department.
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Inspect and monitor work areas to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures, safety rules and OSHA compliance.
  • Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Occasionally they may perform service calls for emergency breakdowns.

What knowledge, skills and abilities required for the Shop Foreman role?

  • Class A CDL license is preferred but not required.
  • Certified welder is preferred but not required.
  • 10 years’ experience in class 8 tractor truck maintenance with background of hydraulics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of class 8 tractor trailer maintenance.
  • Proficient in electronic diagnostics Cummins and Paccar.
  • Experience with Peterbilt chassis a plus.
  • Knowledge of DOT compliance, laws, rules, regulations, and safety is helpful.
  • Knowledge of retail maintenance billing systems.
  • Computer literate. Microsoft, Outlook, and Excel a plus.
  • Attention to detail and possess a high level of accuracy.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with dispatch team and auto haulers.
  • Excellent communication skills both internally and with customers.
  • Work may require more than 40 hours per week.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit/stand for most of his/her job duties. There is the need to frequently walk and sit. There will be a great deal of standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, and reaching for some of his/her job duties.

Visual requirements include reading off a computer screen as well as printed materials. A high degree of dexterity is required due to frequent use of a telephone console.

Verbal and auditory requirements include the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone as well as in person.

There is a moderate level of grasping, lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects of more than 25 lbs.
