Basic Functions :
Under the direction of the Controller, the Medical Billing & Collections Specialist is responsible for accounts receivable, air medical transport medical billing, collections, administration of No Surprises Act requirements, compliance with HIPAA, and understanding and complying with CMS and insurance billing requirements and regulations. This position will also perform other duties as assigned by the Controller.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties :
1. Review transport information downloaded from EMR into the Zoll system for accurate and complete patient and insurance information.
2. Prepare and release bills for electronic and manual transmission in a timely manner (daily / weekly).
3. Apply payments to patient accounts in an expeditious manner.
4. Reconcile patient accounts to ensure accurate and updated information is available in the A / R system.
5. Review denials and appeal when appropriate.
6. Send medical records when appropriately requested.
7. Timely monitoring and follow-up on outstanding account balances.
8. Manage EMR patient files related to billing / collections and records requests.
9. Produce transport reports weekly.
10. Manage No Surprises Act Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) process with contractual partner.
11. Assist with month-end and year-end close.
12. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations related to accounts receivable activities.
13. Meet regularly with and make recommendations to the Controller regarding write-offs, bad debt, payment plans, and hardship determinations. Prepare documentation such as journal entries and obtain written approval prior to processing.
14. Participate in drafting Billing and Collections Finance Procedures and Company Policies and Procedures related to Finance Operations.
15. Participate in cross-training and within the Finance and other Departments to ensure optimal daily operations across all departments of the company
16. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements : Qualifications :
- A minimum of two years of healthcare experience in medical billing and collections; experience with Zoll medical billing and collections a plus
- Billing certification or bachelor’s degree in business or healthcare administration preferred
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and their application to Accounts Receivable
- A basic understanding of A / R Aging and the importance of maintaining A / R records to ensure reports are up to date
- Proficient with Excel, computerized billing, accounting software, and Microsoft 365
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills
- Self-motivated, works well both independently and in a team environment
