Job Title : Technical Director, Narrow Web

Position Title : North America Technical Director, Narrow Web

Reporting to : Vice President Technology and Product Management

Main Focus and Challenges

The North America Technical Director is a critical role for the organization with a core mission of realigning regional technical assets and capabilities to optimally support the business growth strategy and drive technology innovation in inks & coatings.

To ensure ambitious role objectives are met, the North America Technical Director must possess vision, energy, and self-confidence to ensure Flint Group's Narrow Web market technology leadership and continue to strengthen the regional Narrow Web organization by utilizing all the assets Flint Group has to offer.

Collaboration with the global technology organization is paramount to this role. While the regional geographic focus of the role will be North America, the future Director will be expected to actively participate in global programs and projects.

Specific Responsibilities

Lead a technical organization consisting of 7 R&D formulation staff in the laboratory in Rogers, Minnesota
Effectively work across a regional and global matrix structure, especially with regional marketing, product management, sales, operations, regulatory and the global technical team
As a Member of the North American Leadership Team, drive the central R&D and technical innovation and regional technical strategy
Drive strategy alignment with the Narrow Web Sales and product management organization to achieve agreed business growth objectives and plans. Champion and be accountable for the success of technology program : ensure effective, timely, and within budget, project management and execution within the technical team
In partnership with the product management organization, champion phase gate project processes surrounding new product development to drive new product development execution
Ensure Flint Group's Narrow Web technology leadership in UV / EB curable inks & coatings as well as in Water based inks & Coatings for the Pressure Sensitive Label, the Shrink Sleeve and Flexible Packaging market segment
Assess and challenge in depth the technical and commercial viability of all new technical ideas
Allocates resources across Narrow Web projects (market, customer and raw material savings projects) in line with growth prioritization and ensures delivery “on time in full”
Reassess technology strategy sustainability and ensure technology market readiness
Initiate Flint Groups Narrow Web technology sustainability through a robust and viable patent strategy to create and protect Flint Group's Narrow Web proprietary technology
Be present in the market as the technology face of Flint Group's North American Narrow Web division at customers and brand owners, as well as at co-suppliers and industry associations, trade shows, conferences, universities and institutes
Partner with other Technical Directors across Flint Group's businesses (especially water based technologies as well as flexible packaging application specialists) to seek future oriented innovation and integration synergies which create efficiencies and foster growth
Actively contribute as a technology business partner to the Business, Product Management and Sales organizations. Where appropriate enhance sales and marketing presentations and other technical service activities by bridging technical and commercial discussions to ensure a viable customer solution
With full accountability for the laboratory budget, including capital expense and salary administration, oversee and manage the relevant R&D budget in accordance with company objectives
Develops the skills and competences of the North American Narrow Web Technical community and motivates the team to get results
Establishes new, and grows existing technical competencies of the North American Narrow Web Technical organization to remain at the forefront of Narrow Web inks & coatings development
Supervises the North American Narrow Web Technical team including setting of objectives and driving achievement of performance objectives

Qualifications & Experience

Education : PhD in Chemistry

Languages : Fluency in English is a must, any other language is a plus

Professional Experience

5 years of experience in managing a R&D team within the UV / EB technology industry (e.g. R&D teams at raw material suppliers, printers, specialty additives suppliers, etc….)

Deep expertise in specialty chemicals, preferably in UV / EB and Water Based specialty resins with solid understanding of inks and coatings manufacturing processes

A proven track record in the research & development of UV / EB technology related fields

Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary technical teams as well as possesses solid experience in laboratory management

Possess solid experience in Project Management, especially innovation project management (stage-gate process)

Proven ability to operate comfortably and effectively across a global technical organization within a multinational organization. A track record building solid working relationships with sales, manufacturing, and customers

Having experience in dealing with Industry Associations

Being experienced in managing patents (initiate patent searches, writing and editing patents, etc….) in order to present Flint Group's Narrow Web technology patent strategy to the Business partners

Creating success in this role through proven leadership and demonstrated results that support the company values and behaviors will enable future growth within the organization

Possess leadership and a positive spirit with the ability to motivate others and drive team success

Possess strong self-initiative with an inherent ability to set priorities and then deliver on those priorities with a sense of urgency

Be able to communicate assertively, effectively, and credibly across all levels of the organization to ensure consistency and delivery of the Narrow Web Technology message. Be comfortable engaging with internal and external audiences
