What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator III position at Florence County SC?
Job Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator III is responsible for operating various types of heavy equipment to accomplish and ensure efficient County road construction and maintenance throughout Florence County.
Essential Functions:
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as bulldozer, backhoe, tractors, trucks, etc to load, pile and push various materials such as sand, gravel, earth or refuse.
- Cuts and levels new roads as well as performs maintenance to existing roads and driveways.
- Digs drainage ditches for installations of storm drains/tiles/pipe.
- Removes trees and vegetation adjacent to roadways.
- Transports equipment to job sites.
- Utilizes various types of tools including a roller, hydro seeder, chain saw, shovel, axe, post hole digger, mechanic’s tools, carpentry tools, transit, radio, etc.
- Performs routine preventative maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
- Completes vehicle and equipment maintenance reports.
- Directs and guides utility assistant.
- Oversees special projects.
- On-call once a month after hours and on weekends; however is to report for tasks as needed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Pick up supplies as needed.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Requires a high school education with three to five years’ experience in heavy equipment operation or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must have valid S. C. driver’s license.
- Must possess a CDL license.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 50 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 95%.
