Investigator- Public Defender

Job Description

The Investigator – Public Defender is responsible for investigating a wide variety of criminal cases for both General Sessions and Family (Juvenile) Courts. Works at the pleasure of and reports to the Public Defender.

Essential Functions:

• Reviews and analyzes Law Enforcement case file reports, Body Worn Camera videos, statements and evidence.
• Conducts interviews with indigent defendants and witnesses for information at their residence, the Public Defender’s office, S.C. Dept of Corrections, the Detention Center or Department of Juvenile Justice.
• Documents pertinent information and shares with appropriate members of the Public Defender’s Office.
• Prepares cases for court by organizing all evidence and facts, completing reports.
• Provides Court testimony as necessary.
• Travels to and reviews crime scenes with attorney.
• Interviews Law Enforcement officers and witnesses in preparation for trial.
• Serves Subpoenas.
• Serves as training liason with South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
• Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms and driving skills.
• Interacts with various groups and individuals including the immediate supervisor, Public Defender, co-workers, employees, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, court employees, community leaders, city departments, FBI, SLED, ATF, ABC agents, medical staff, Coroner, other state and federal agencies, etc.

Non-Essential Functions:

• Attends periodic trainings and seminars.
• Performs all other related duties as required.

Qualifications: Education and Work Experience

• Must possess a High School Diploma.
• Must obtain a Certification with SC Justice Academy.
• Five years of law enforcement investigations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and experience.

• Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 20 lb. objects regularly.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must have the ability to travel up to 50%.
