Job Description
The Shelter Assistant is responsible for caring for the animals that come into the Facility.
Essential Functions:
- Conducts walk throughs of the Animal Facility to observe and report any abnormal conditions of the animals.
- Performs evaluations of all animals in the shelter.
- Sanitizes kennels, water and feeds animals as needed.
- Administers medications and vaccinations as needed.
- Posts, maintains and updates our adoptable animals on various websites.
- Maintains medical history and record of healthcare provided to our animals.
- Participates and manages programs and projects related to the shelter.
- Intake animals from the public and assist intaking animals from officers.
- Coordinates the animal’s weekend medications needs with the on call officer.
- Monitor supply inventories and alerts Shelter Manager of low stocks.
- Coordinates visits with and transports animals to and from, rescue agencies, vet offices and clinics.
- Monitors supply inventories and alerts Shelter Manager of low inventories.
- Performs and assists with humane euthanasia when needed.
- Supervises inmates in their daily activities.
- Evaluates and recommends animals that can be adopted.
- Introduces prospective pets to families visiting the shelter and processes the necessary paperwork for and performs animals adoptions.
- Interacts with the public, co-workers, inmates, agencies, vet offices, rescue and adoption shelters.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Take and uploads pictures/videos of our adoptable animals to social media websites.
- Assists with intakes of animals from the public and our officers.
- Must be proficient with Excel, data entry and be able to quickly learn new software.
- Attend classes, conferences and training as needed.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Requires a high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Professional experience working with animals preferred.
- Requires S.C. Driver’s license.
- Must obtain Humane Euthanasia certification within one year of hire.

- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 60 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 10%.
