This position reports directly to the Associate Director for Campus Safety & Security/Deputy Chief of Police. The Florida A&M University DCSS is the first and the only historically black college and university (HBCU) law enforcement agency to be accredited by three separate law enforcement accrediting bodies; and the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Accreditation (IACLEA), and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CAL EA).
Responsibilities
Every member within the agency will strive to provide excellent police services to all students, faculty/staff, visitors, and merchants of the FAMU community; committing to the concept of inclusion and community-oriented policing when carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities, in a concerted effort to enhance campus safety and security for all who come upon the FAMU grounds. Officers provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. This is law enforcement work supervising law enforcement officers.
While performing the duties of a law enforcement officer, tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running and climbing. The duties of a LEO may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and/or people, such as in the event of chasing and/or subduing a suspect(s) resisting arrest. Some tasks are performed with the potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noises, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic and animals. Tasks includes working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, golf carts, ATV's and material handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.
Provides oversight and supervision for Accreditation, Special Operations, Investigations, Evidence Custodian, Record, and Dispatch; Informs subordinates of all relevant University Regulations and Internal Operating Procedures and provides access to all related documents; Assesses and documents subordinates' ability to comply with all relevant University Regulations, Internal Operating Procedures, and accreditation standards; Employs measures of accountability for compliance with University Regulations, Internal Operating Procedures, and accreditation standards; Conducts and documents performance evaluations in a timely manner for each subordinate, in accordance with University Regulations, Internal Operating Procedures, and accreditation standards; and manages all accreditation’s bodies, intern program, community engagement programs, and served as the Clery Officer.
Communicates with the public to gain their confidence and to enhance crime prevention and law enforcement efforts; Serves as the Special Operations Coordinator; Directs, plans, organizes and supervises assigned law enforcement activities for Special Operations (university move-ins, sporting events, graduations, off-duty event coordination, etc.); Attends meetings and represents Department on numerous University planning committees for events requiring security; and serves as a liaison between the police department, clients, vendors, and the general public.
Responsible for making recommendations/proposals on purchases and budgetary needs to the Chief of Police/Deputy Chief; Researches and prepares detailed and financial reports; Responsible for all Law Enforcement command functions within the Department of Campus Safety and Security; Participates in on- and off-campus law enforcement committees, university committees, special assignments, etc., on an as needed basis; and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate area of specialization and four years of law enforcement experience, or a master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of experience.
Additional requirements are as follows: Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to be insured by Florida A&M University. Must have a Florida Law Enforcement Academy Certificate or certification from another state with the ability to become certified in the State of Florida within six (6) months of hire. Must have obtained an Accreditation Manager certification or be eligible to obtain in six(6) months. Must complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and current and continued certification in department-required courses such as CPR, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens.

Preferred Qualifications
In addition to the minimum educational and years of experience requirements, preference will be given to the incumbent with 10 years of law enforcement experience, including four years of documented experience in a supervisory role at the rank of Lieutenant or higher, and currently holds general instructor certification. Also, have obtained general certification through FDLE and have taken an Accreditation Manager course, or be eligible to so within six (6) months.
Anticipated Salary Range
The hiring salary is $85,000.00

LEO Lieutenant is expected and required to fulfill the duties and responsibilities assigned until fully complete through a 80-hour biweekly pay period depending upon the needs of the department.
