Reporting through the Department of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Sport Programs is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of a comprehensive recreational and competitive sports program, including both intramural sports and sport clubs. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Programs and Wellness Initiatives, the Assistant Director of Sport Programs administers, organizes, and promotes an Intramural Sports program serving 2,000 participants each year, as well as aiding in oversight of sport club activities. Job Description
Sport Programming:
- Provide development, direction and evaluation of all sports programs, including but not limited to: Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, and Special Events.
- Adapt programs, when possible, to meet the needs of a variety of skill levels, abilities, and interests of the University community.
- Supervise and administer all intramural sports leagues, tournaments and special events.
- Hold disciplinary meetings, as needed, with ejected participants and/or teams.
- Serve as final appeal level in regard to judicial decisions with Intramurals and provides insight as necessary on Sport Clubs appeal decisions.
- Interprets Student Government guidelines and statutes as needed.
- Research, review, and edit sport rules, policies, and procedures annually; implementing changes as needed to stay consistent with current national standards.
- Assist in the oversight and management of 20 Sport Clubs to ensure compliance with all applicable university guidelines.
- Update the Sport Club Handbook on an annual basis to ensure policies and procedures align with current university guidelines.
- Assist with the preparation, and projection of expenditures for Sport Club budget and allocation of funding to each club.
- Assist with review, approval and coordination of Sport Club travel plans, purchases and event requests.
- Generate a comprehensive schedule for all intramural sports, sport clubs, and sport specific special events using on-campus facilities, and submit to Campus Recreation departmental lead on reservations.
Student Development and Supervision:
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate approximately 2 Program Assistants, 10 Sport Programs Supervisors and 30 Intramural Sport Officials.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date staff contact lists, and assist with coordination of shift coverage as needed.
- Organize and lead staff trainings, and maintain regular communication with staff regarding departmental updates, special events, scheduling, etc.
- Evaluate the performance of employees on a semester basis and provide written and verbal feedback upon completion.
- Provide staff with on-going mentorship through regular check-ins and one-on-one meetings.
- Oversee the Sport Club Council and Sport Club Executive Board; including direct oversight of the Sport Club Executive Board Chair.
- Organize and lead monthly Sport Club Council meetings, and maintain regular communication with officers regarding university updates, required trainings, special events, etc.
- Organize and lead regular Sport Club Executive Board meetings; including oversight on disciplinary sanctions, Sport Club Handbook updates, and Sport Club Banquet planning
- Provide Sport Club officers with on-going mentorship through regular check-ins and one-on-one meetings as needed.
Facility Operations and Risk Management:
- Track sport program equipment inventory and project equipment replacement needs on an annual basis.
- Provide support and input with regard to custodial services and/or equipment and field maintenance via work order requests.
- Maintain regular communication with the Campus Recreation departmental lead on reservations to coordinate necessary field lining for sport programs.
- Ensure students are informed of current safety and risk management procedures in departmental Emergency Action Plan; review with staff on an annual basis.
- Serve as Essential Personnel for the university
Assessment:
- Assist with development of departmental strategic plan and annual assessment materials.
- Assist with preparing monthly and annual reports related to Key Performance Indicators
- Assist with preparation of the department’s budget through fitness staffing and expense projections.
- Assist with marketing efforts for fitness programming as needed.
Marginal:
- Assist in the preparation of the department’s budget.
- Attend meetings with other Campus Recreation stakeholders, including but not limited to: Owls Care Health Promotion, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Services, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Government, and others.
- Assist with departmental initiatives and division-wide special events. (Rec Fest, Student staff appreciation events, Graduation etc)
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
