PURPOSE: The Office Nurse/Medical Assistant, under the supervision of the Office Manager, is responsible for assisting in the delivery of health care and patient care management
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/training: High school graduate or GED and current certification, if applicable
Experience:
- One-year medical experience in a physician’s office or equivalent combination of training and experience preferred; will train a highly motivated new graduate
Skills:
- Knowledge of medical practice and care
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions
- Ability to assist in a variety of common office procedures
- Ability to take vital signs
- Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance
- Skill in identifying and resolving problems
- Ability to maintain records and record test results
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
- Ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic
- Proficiency in the operation of a computer keyboard
Physical Abilities:
- Stand for extended periods of time; push, pull and reach; occasionally bend, sit stoop and stretch
- Have full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients
- Have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and medical equipment
- Have a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds
- Maintain a current and valid driver’s license

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To assist the physician or nurse practitioners in their duties and accept specific area of responsibility as designated by the Provider.
- Medical Assistant will take direction from the Provider as to his/her duties in patient care.
- Medical Assistant has no authority concerning medication or pharmacy issues.
- Medical Assistant will verbally discuss his/her role with Provider if the role is not explicitly described herein.
- Medical Assistant will make sample requests and provide feedback to drug representatives.
- Assure the readiness pf the clinical areas for each working day; report to work at designated time and have all clinical activities fully operational at the start of business hours.
- Medical Assistant must manage ERx and patient portals in EMA.
- Verify patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history; updating patient medical records; confirming purpose of visit.
- Prepares patients for examination and treatment by escorting them from the waiting area to the exam room.
- Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms
- Prepares and maintains clinical supplies and equipment
- Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions and report breakdowns to manager; perform preventive maintenance weekly and monthly.
- Creates, maintains, copies and files patient files, records and other information as needed
- Treats staff, physicians, visitors and patients with dignity and respect
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results such as performing receptionist tasks; float effectively and consistently where needed.
- Keep supplies ready by inventory stock; submit requests of supplies to manager; verify receipt of items once delivered.
- Answers the telephone in a professional manner and liaise with the Provider regarding all patient enquiries.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities such as reading professional publications.
- Awareness of the need for confidentiality with written, spoken and electronic word. Respects and maintains privacy and dignity of patients; assure patient confidentiality at all times
- Sterilizing medical equipment and tools, disposing of waste materials properly and restocking the facility with the required supplies.
- Maintain compliance with biohazard bags by following protocol regarding handling and storage.
- Organize and prepare MOHS surgery packets
- Assist with MOHS procedures and blue light therapy when needed.
- Assist the physician/provider during examinations and surgery
- Performs other related work as required.
- Suture removal
- Inform patients about post-op wound care
- Manage biopsy and test results; make post-op and pathology phone calls to patients.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work of this position is performed in an environmentally controlled office environment. The position requires the ability to work under pressure and with a diverse population, including staff, physicians, clients, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public on a regular basis. Occasional overtime may be required and/or hours may be shortened as business needs dictate.
