General Description: The Director of Operations is responsible for improving efficiency and increasing departmental profits while managing the company's overall operations. Oversee all daily procedures, including safety, performance, recruiting, operating budgets, sales goals, and customer satisfaction. As a leadership team member, you will guide, support, and mentor department managers on the FEWR 12 principles for success.

To succeed in this position, the candidate will be an organized, hands-on leader, able to manage and mentor a team of 75 employees. Have experience with budget and P&L experience and accountability. Achieve company goals and resolve daily challenges by using facts to determine the best course of action when determining resolutions. Must be open to work weekends when required, demonstrating teamwork, which is a core principle of our leadership team.

Job Description: The Director of Operations will be responsible for but not limited to:

Primary Duties:
  • Manage and direct the field operations and programs in the areas of collection, recycling, and disposal of waste and recyclables.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and assign priority tasks to supervisory and operational staff members.
  • Monitor operational performance and make recommendations for system improvements with special emphasis in the areas of expected tonnage, vehicle transitions, equipment maintenance and fuel usage, preparation of equipment specifications, award of bids, and coordination of contract services provided to the Division.
  • Execute disciplinary actions, employee counseling, conflict resolution, accident/incident prevention/injury reduction procedures.
  • Administer company policies while coordinating with the President and the HR department, ensuring items are carried out according to policy from any underlings.
  • Develop/Enforce policy manuals and procedures for operating facilities and implementing policy direction; assists in the development of new policy statements and directives; evaluates impact of policy changes on operations activities.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, statutes, ordinances, and permit conditions as they relate to solid waste and fleet maintenance; reviews proposed regulations to determine potential impacts and proposed amendments. Following all DOL, DOT, and OSHA regulations in the workforce.
Leadership Responsibilities:
  • Develops and implements employee development programs to improve skill levels and provide an environment for continuous improvement through training programs and team building exercises.
  • Manage/delegate and oversee monthly safety meetings, performance reviews, observations, new hire training, and terminations as needed.
  • Lead company improvement goals and assist where necessary to complete daily tasks.
  • Ex: safety plan improvement, facility cleanliness, route audits for safety and profits, etc.
  • Manage and mentor the Operations Manager with department communications. Coordinate with the Dispatcher, Maintenance Coordinator, and Drivers throughout each business day, resolving conflicts or abnormal situations ensuring daily goals are accomplished.
  • Oversee and Coordinate Daily/Weekly/Monthly Scheduling/Routing of the Maintenance Department. Guide and mentor the maintenance coordinator and maintenance manager to make prompt, safe, efficient, and cost-effective decisions based on fact.
  • Apply logic to damage or repairs and intervene preventatively.
  • Lead by example. Introduce Leadership activities into the company. Develop staff members of all levels.
  • Exude professional communication with all staff members and customers.
  • Oversee and retain responsibility for all department supervision roles. Enforce the responsibilities of the Operations Manager and other delegate supervisors, confirming they are assisting and reviewing daily routing once dispatch is complete. Daily reviews are to improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Manage the Safety Coordinator and ensure his role in the company achieves all safety goals. Continually review performance daily to guarantee the company operates in the safest possible way.
  • Manage Sales Team, providing guidance, leadership, and direction to members.
  • Communications Availability: respond to all emails daily in a timely fashion. Provide professional feedback that demonstrates your grasp of the task and what your action plan will be. Be available via phone or in person anytime a FEE truck is operating. If not physically at the shop, make sure supervisors or other onsite managers know to call you should a decision need to be made.
  • Fleet Accountability: know the fleet. Monitor for unreported damage and resolve according to policy. Clean trucks are safe trucks.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Monitor payroll and approve weekly time sheets/payroll/overtime report. Correct/Review any errors or omissions with HR and employees.
  • Recommend and or prepare purchase requisitions as needed to President. In writing, whenever possible. This includes weekly inventory level of MT and all rolling stock.
  • Monitor current and future staffing needs; work with HR to procure all needed staff.
  • Responsible to Delegate/Manage/Oversee all routing of all divisions (PT, RO, FEL, RESI). Ensure the
  • Customer interaction: Be the conduit between a compliment or complaint to ensure the situation is closed promptly and to the satisfaction of both parties.
  • Account Management: Increase knowledge of all customers, large or small, in the markets we serve.
  • P&L Management: Metric driven to identify irregularities and develop and implement change for the positive.
