Position Specific Description

This position is responsible for the installation and maintenance of systems, equipment, components, modules, and assemblies that use RF (radio frequency) energy to transfer voice and/or data. The role also installs and maintains facilities necessary to connect RF equipment to wireline or functionally comparable communication media/paths provided by others within or outside FPL. This includes but is not limited to

  • Two-way dispatch, multiple address paging, mobile data terminal, RF link (terrestrial and satellite), Microwave systems and communications equipment/systems. This position also investigates Television Internet and Radio interference originating from the electrical grid.

Job Overview

The Communication and Battery Specialist is responsible for the installation and maintenance of systems, equipment, components, modules, and assemblies that use RF (radio frequency) energy to transfer voice and/or data. The Communication and Battery Specialist also installs and maintains those facilities necessary to connect RF equipment to wireline or functionally comparable communication media/paths provided by others within or outside FPL. This includes but is not limited to

  • two-way dispatch, multiple address paging, mobile data terminal, RF link (terrestrial and satellite), HF and communications equipment and systems. This position also investigates TVI/RFI problems reported by FPL customers and prepares work tickets for corrective action by FPL crew if the TVI/RFI is caused by FPL facilities or equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Must hold FCC General Class Radiotelephone License, NABER Certification or similar equivalent industry accepted/endorsed electronics technician certification and must be presented for verification by the issuing agency. NOTE: An FCC License is required to do installation and/or maintenance of aircraft and HF radio equipment.
  • Candidate must have knowledge of current communication systems employing one and two-way radio equipment for information transfer between fixed and mobile locations. This includes, but is not limited to: portable, mobile and fixed radio stations equipped to handle voice and/or data networks (telco, microwave, etc.), 900 MHZ links, voting systems, paging systems, etc. Candidate must be able to use Personal Computer hardware and software as installation, preventive and corrective maintenance tools for assigned equipment/systems. Software for tracking time inventory and accessing data communications systems is used as well.
  • Candidate must have applicable, related and recent (within the past two (2) years) hands-on experience in the installation, test troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance of current communications systems and equipment. This experience will include both high-level (black box replacement), and low level (component/piece-part removal/replacement). The candidate must indicate familiarity and proficiency with all the appropriate test and repair equipment delineated on the lists provided during the interview. These lists are updated to be representative of the variety of systems and equipment currently used at FPL
