What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Coach - Swimming position at Florida Southern College?
The Head Coach for men’s and women’s swimming provides direction and administrative oversight for the program related to successful athletic performance, recruitment and retention of quality student athletes, providing the necessary leadership for a positive competitive environment for student athletes. Responsibilities include all activities associated with the management of a successful NCAA Division II program within the College in addition to fundraising and outreach within the local community.
The position is a 12-month coaching position whereas the coach is treated as a full-time employee for the entire 12-month period, not just during the sports season.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for all aspects of the Men’s and Women’s swimming program, ensuring the program reflects positively on the College.
- Facilitate a positive environment for athletes and coaches.
- Oversees and maintains the aquatic facilities, ensuring safety, instructing simmers, and managing staff and programs.
- Responsible for the operation of the pool, lifeguard staff, and swim lessons.
- Responsible for the hiring and evaluation of assistant coaches that will provide effective and positive leadership for the program
- Train and develop student athletes, as well as assistant coaches, in the sport’s skills, strategies, techniques and conditioning.
- Oversee budgets, scheduling, inventory, travel logistics, strength and conditioning, fundraising, and community service and engagement projects.
- Manage the planning of practice sessions and developing game plans for competition.
- Recruit qualified Prospective Student Athletes (PSA), e.g., through evaluation and identification of prospective student athletes; by evaluation of skill and academic performance; contact and communication with PSA’s and families; and cultivation of relationships with high school and two-year coaches.
- Monitor the academic progress and success of team members and helping with academic related forms and processes.
- Abide by all NCAA, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Southern College rules, policies and procedures with an understanding that failure to do so may lead to sanctions up to and including termination.
- Promptly report any suspected violation (including possible violations committed personally or by any other member of the athletics department staff, compliance related offices and staff, student athletes, or boosters) of NCAA, SSC or FSC Athletics rules to the Assistant AD for Compliance, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) or Director of Athletics.
- Actively participate in the education and enforcement of NCAA Rules within the sport community.
- Work closely with the athletic training staff to ensure the safety of all student-athletes.
- Represent the program and Florida Southern College with sportsmanship, integrity, and professionalism.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
- Attend all department staff meetings as required.
- Accurately complete all required or assigned NCAA, SSC, and FSC forms, reports, or required paperwork.
- Work cooperatively with other athletics coaches and Florida Southern College Faculty/Staff.
- Maintain current CPR and First Aid Certifications.
5. Contribute to the overall success of the Athletics department by performing all other duties as assigned by the Athletics Director.
EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Master’s degree from accredited institution preferred. Bachelor’s degree required.
2. Minimum 3 years of successful, collegiate coaching experience.
3. Demonstrated ability to recruit academically successful student-athletes.
4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
5. Valid Florida driver’s license.
6. Strong knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. High level of physical activity is required for field work such as training, practice and games.
2. Walking and Standing: Many hours are spent on pool decks, observing swimmers and providing feedback, which can be physically tiring.
3. Demonstrating Techniques: Frequently need to demonstrate swimming strokes, drills, or exercises, which can require stamina, strength, and mobility.
4. Rescue Skills, In emergency situations, a swim coach must be prepared to quickly enter the water and assist swimmers, which demands physical readiness and strong swimming ability.
5. Long Hours: Training sessions, competitions, and events can involve extended hours, requiring endurance and energy.
6. Handling Equipment: Setting up and storing training aids such as kickboards, pull buoys, or lane ropes may involve lifting and carrying.
7. Voice Projection: Calling out instructions over the noise of the pool can be a strain on the vocal cords.
