The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is an active member of the treatment team and provides peer support
services to clients with substance misuse, to include co-occurring mental health challenges.
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Peer Support Specialist serves as an advocate and a role
model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping and living skills. The PSS
provides and coordinates a full array of engagement/recovery care management services for clients in the ED
Program and Florida Springs treatment programs. The primary goals of the Peer Support Specialists are to
improve linkages between the client, treatment providers, and community-based support systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Makes contact with substance use/co-occurring patients within 30 minutes after ED alert is received.
  • Serve as a Recovery Ambassador, by promoting positive recovery message and services of Florida

Springs and contracted Hospital system.

  • Effectively communicate individualized resources, supports and services to participates as they request

this information and other support systems of those persons.

  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery
  • Work with clients individually and in group:

o Assist clients with problem solving techniques and other essential life skills
o Assist clients in their recovery process by engaging them in meaningful dialogues

  • Assist clients in working with their case manager and/or treatment team in determining the steps

necessary to achieving their own recovery goals.

  • Share lived experience of substance use and co-occurring mental health recovery.

o Confidence in own wellness.
o Passion and enthusiasm for peer support and the belief that recovery is possible.

  • Acts as an advocate for effective recovery-based services.
  • Understand the importance of working as a team with other health care professionals to assist in

providing the best care possible for the client.

  • Comply with all Hospital and Organization policies and procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing recovery training, education and performance support.
  • Maintain and submit accurate documentation on client progress as per policy and procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in internal training programs as requested.
  • Establish a consistent and open relationship with the all components of the ED program and hospital

staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Minimum 2 years personal recovery experience regarding mental illness/substance abuse and willing to

talk to others about their experience.

  • Has experience in formal work and /or volunteer experience related to mental health/substance abuse
  • Certification: Certified Recovery Support Specialist and/or Certified Recovery Peer Specialist by the

Florida Certification Board (If certification is not achieved prior to being hired, you will have 1 year
from hire date to complete and submit to HR)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and persuasively express self verbally and in writing, using correct

language and grammar in a professional, diplomatic, empathetic and tactful manner.

  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Ability to set appropriate boundaries and limits with clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, planning, scheduling and

organizing professional schedule to complete actions within established deadlines and handling multiple
priorities with strong attention to detail

  • Computer competency and working knowledge of EHR software applications.
