Position Overview: The Unit Clerk performs a variety of clerical tasks under the direction of the House Supervisor or the Medical-Surgical Director to ensure the efficiency of the Medical-Surgical Unit. The Unit Clerk provides services to the patients, medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments for the management of non-nursing duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Act as a receptionist; receive new patients and direct visitors.
- Answer telephones; receive and deliver messages accurately and timely.
- Provide information and direction, in accordance with HIPAA standards, to visitors and hospital staff.
- Communicate patient needs to members of the nursing staff and ancillary departments in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain “paper” charts in a safe manner and in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Communicate physician orders to appropriate nursing staff and ancillary departments in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepare necessary chart copies for discharges and transfers to other medical facilities or health care agencies.
- Schedule outpatient treatments in collaboration the infusion nurse.
- Help organize daily outpatient treatments as directed by the infusion nurse or nursing supervisor.
- Scan patient charges into the computer daily and as needed.
- Perform discharge follow up phone calls. Refer patient questions to appropriate staff as needed.
- Maintain the patient teaching folders.
- Assure that any necessary forms are organized and current.
- Assists in inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment.
- Puts away supplies.
- Updates electronic white board at the nurse’s station.
- Updates white boards in the patient room if directed.
- Performs bedside blood glucose monitoring each morning and as needed.
- Performs quality control checks daily on the Accu-Chek machines.
- Assists in maintenance of safe, clean work environment.
- Assists with the general operation of the Medical-Surgical Department.
- Assist in other departments as needed or as directed.

- Places Maintenance and IT requests in the computer as directed.
Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology is preferred.
- Clerical experience and/or health care experience preferred.
- Legible handwriting, ability to print.
