The position is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school.  Training can be provided by the Transportation Department.

 

JOB GOAL:  

To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curricular and extra-curricular programs.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Meet school bus driver certification requirements:
    1. Minimum hours of instruction.
    2. Satisfactorily pass the knowledge examination.
  • Meet state requirements for appropriate licensing.
  • Meet local or state standards for driving test.
  • Meet local or state standards for driver record check.

Performance Duties:

  1. Complies with Motor Vehicle Laws and Regulations of the State Board of Education.
  2. Operates the bus over the assigned route and makes no change unless duly authorized.
  3. Wears the driver’s safety lap belt if the bus is so equipped.
  4. Stops in the right-hand lane of the highway for receiving or discharging pupils at designated stops only at points where the bus can be seen for a safe distance from both directions. On divided highways, stops shall be so arranged that pupils will be taken on and discharged on the side of such highways as will eliminate the necessity of their crossing the highway.
  5. Exercises every possible care for the safety and comfort of the pupils en route and to permit no pupil to ride on the outside of the bus or with head, hands or arms out of the windows.
  6. Makes daily pre-trip inspections of the bus, reports any needed repairs and exercises every possible care in its use.
  7. Governs the speed of the bus according to limits established by law for school buses while transporting pupils.
  8. Comes to a full stop on approaching a railroad crossing, looks and listens carefully in order to positively determine when it is safe to cross the track.
  9. Maintains discipline and reports all cases of disobedience to school principal.
  10. Places flags and flares on highway in case of breakdown, notifies the school authorities (in accordance with the policy of the school board) and keeps the pupils in the bus until it is repaired or until they are transferred to another bus.
  11. Refrains from use of alcoholic drink, tobacco, food, profane and unclean language when on duty and sees that pupils conduct themselves likewise.
  12. Makes all reports and attends meetings and training sessions required by school authorities.
  13. Accountable for flags, flares, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher.
  14. Prevents any object from being placed in the bus that will restrict passageway to the entrance or emergency doors and keeps bottles or other loose objects off of the floor.
  15. Keeps assigned bus clean.
  16. Keeps to assigned schedule.
  17. Discharges students only at authorized stops.
  18. Exercises responsible leadership when providing transportation for out-of-county school trips.
  19. Transports only authorized students.
  20. Makes post-trip inspection to make sure no students remain on the bus.
  21. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information as expected of all staff.
  22. Attends staff meetings as required.
  23. Discharges all responsibilities and fulfills all obligations as specified in contract, policies and guidelines of the Floyd County School Board.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor or the superintendent.

Salary: 

Regular Route $10,409 - $18,881

Long Route $11,551 - $20,952
