Fluvanna SPCA is a small, forward-thinking, open-admission animal shelter with a 93% live-release rate whose mission is to rescue homeless dogs and cats and to place them in permanent, loving homes. We strive to adhere to modern, evidence-based philosophies and policies to minimize fear, anxiety, and stress for our animals. We have motivated and knowledgeable new shelter leadership and are upping our game!
Your Role:
As an Animal Treatment staffer, you’ll play a vital role in providing hands-on medical and other care to our shelter animals! You'll monitor animal health, administer treatments, and work closely with our consulting veterinarians and other staff, all while ensuring exceptional customer service. Your day will be filled with rewarding interactions, from caring for animals to assisting foster parents to collaborating with volunteers. If you’re organized, compassionate, and eager to make a difference in the lives of animals, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
Examples of activities on a typical day include dispensing medication and performing other treatments, providing vaccines, monitoring animals’ health and well being, maintaining communication with foster families regarding animals’ medical issues or vet treatments, coordinating offsite veterinary care, and keeping all animals’ records accurate and up to date in our shelter software.
What We’re Looking For:
- Experience providing medical treatment in an animal shelter or veterinarian’s office. Familiarity with Fear-Free practices is a plus.
- Leadership mindset, strong initiative.
- A positive, upbeat, professional demeanor.
- Compassion, patience, and understanding with all animals in shelter care.
- A proactive, self-motivated, detail oriented person with a knack for problem-solving and openness to improving practices.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute daily work while maintaining a high standard of animal care.
- A willingness to learn and embrace change, ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
- Must be a team player and self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

- Schedule includes one weekend day (5 days/wk), some days may have early start or late end (when coordinating transports).
- Valid Virginia Driver's license required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Pay $17.00-$22.00/hour depending on experience.
