Healthcare Navigators perform a wide range of tasks that are designed to promote engagement of individuals with substance use disorders and linkage with appropriate treatment services and supports. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist reflects a collaborative and strengths‐based approach, with the primary goal being to assist individuals in achieving sustained recovery from addiction and/or mental health issues. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist serves in a supportive role within a treatment setting to enhance the services. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist is trained and certified in the domains of Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, Recovery/Wellness Support, and Ethical Responsibilities to better support consumers in achieving recovery and resiliency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists clients in gaining access to needed resources in the community.
2. Supports clients in engaging in the community or their current level of care.
3. Supports clients in overcoming barriers and helping to bridge gaps between needs and available resources.
4. Serves as recovery navigator/mentor connecting clients with needed services in the clients’ area, including substance use disorder and mental health treatment services and serves as a liaison between staff and clients.
5. Assists clients in developing a strong foundation in recovery by establishing support systems, self-care, independence/self-sufficiency, and healthy coping skills that support long-term recovery.
6. Maintains schedule of activities in Carelogic, monitors alerts in Carelogic (failed activities, activities not statused, etc.) and resolves issues daily.
7. Consults with and reports to direct supervisor to resolve crises and minimize risk.
8. Assists clients with applying for health insurance or other social services.
9. Arranges transportation to and from aftercare treatment and support services.
10. Demonstrates and models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
11. Assists clients in modifying attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing their understanding of self.
12. Provides clients with linkage to ongoing education regarding substance abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, tobacco, nutrition and exercise and other health and wellness information.
13. Educates and supports clients in implementing a range of relapse prevention and harm-reduction strategies.
14. Works closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure client needs are met.
15. Actively participates in supervision with supervisor.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Formal Education, Certification/Licensure, & Other Requirements
1. Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Current certification as a Peer Recovery Coach in the State of West Virginia by the Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals or ability to become certified within one (1) year from the date of hire.
3. Minimum two (2) years demonstrated personal recovery experience.
4. Preferred experience with substance use disorders, homelessness, mental illness, and domestic violence.
5. Valid WV Driver’s License in good standing.
6. Must be able to pass all required background checks.
Physical Requirements
1. Frequent communications, verbal and written.
2. Frequent standing and/or sitting.
3. Visually or otherwise be able to identify, observe and assess clients.
