What are the responsibilities and job description for the Audio Drama Staff Writer position at Focus on the Family?
The Staff Writer position exists to write original scripts for the Adventures in Odyssey audio dramas, as well as additional writing assignments which may include, wraps, comic strips, social media posts, Club devotionals, promotional copy, podcast scripts, etc.; may also be involved in both casting and directing.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Character/Spiritual:

Pursues the Great Commission given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Focus; adheres to the Standard of Moral Conduct and Statement of Faith; upholds Focus on the Family's ministry in prayer
Prays personally for Focus on the Family’s staff and constituents and may occasionally lead in a public prayer
Engages in Christian ministry
Demonstrates behaviors aligned with FOF core values
This role is considered a Spokesperson for Focus on the Family and should represent Focus’ position and tone at all times

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Creates 8-10 Adventures in Odyssey scripts per year
- Edits/rewrites manuscripts as directed
- Reviews and provides input on Adventures in Odyssey story pitches, outlines, and scripts from in-house and free-lance writers
- Writes comic book scripts for Odyssey website/Club
- Creates social media posts
- Creates original copy
- May write Club devotionals and podcast scripts
- Proofreads copy at various stages of development
- Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading, personal contact, and research
- May direct episodes
- May edit voice tracks for audio dramas/podcasts/promos/radio spots
- Performs other duties, including but not limited to duties as assigned, some of which may include the development and creation of a variety of copyrightable works (e.g., print, photography, voice work, film, music, visual arts, etc.) for distribution in any and all media and formats (such as television, radio, internet, wireless, DVD, satellite and digital) on a world-wide basis, all of which shall be for the benefit of Focus on the Family
- Office environment
- May be required to travel occasionally
- This role may require occasional travel including nights and weekends

Personal Characteristics:
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, assertive yet humble, articulate, decisive, diplomatic, self-accountable, patient, flexible, approachable, demonstrating concern for long-term effectiveness, possessing a creative bent, and must fit in well with creative team
- Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Journalism, or English
- 2 - 4 years successful creative writing experience
- Thorough knowledge of the Bible is required
- Working knowledge of FOF mission, philosophy, values, and objectives
- Advanced writing skills: ability to imitate various writing styles
- Ability to both think and write creatively
- Ability to clearly articulate and to defend a position
- Ability to deal with stress due to deadline pressure
- Basic organizational skills
- Ability to apply imaginative approaches to others’ ideas
- Competent in use of computer software
