Job Title: Occupational Therapists Assistant

Department: Operations

Reports To: Rehab Director, Area Director, and RDO/RVP

 

Summary:

Under general supervision of an Occupational Therapist and according to established treatment plans and specific procedures, provides treatment to occupational therapy patients in order to assist them in regaining physical abilities and function, increase functional skills and independence.  Performs related clerical and service duties.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Occupational Therapist in the development and implementation of individual patient occupational therapy care plans; performs daily occupational therapy assignments to accomplish patient therapy plans and treatment goals.
  • Responsible for the daily care of assigned patients.
  • Guides patients through prescribed exercise programs, including passive, assistive, and resistive exercise routines which are designed to develop or enhance strength, muscle tone, and range of motion.
  • Applies heat, light, water, and electrically based treatments/modalities (i.e., ultrasound, infra-red lamp, muscle stimulation, traction, hot and cold packs, paraffin baths, whirlpool, diathermy, etc.) to stimulate muscle/nerve function and/or for pain management, as prescribed, with proven competency and available equipment.
  • Assists patients in ADL skills retraining.
  • Performs other therapeutic activities such as massage and body mechanics.
  • Observes patient condition during treatment and notes any significant change in patient condition.
  • Seeks assistance from Occupational Therapist when appropriate.
  • Records patient response to treatment and overall progress in patient charts.
  • Refers patients to Occupational Therapist for re-evaluation as necessary.
  • Prepares patient referrals as requested by Occupational Therapist.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with Occupational Therapist as to individual program design, implementation and progress status.
  • Participate in Occupational Therapy Assistants' meetings conducted by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Advises professional team members of patient progress and perceived effectiveness of treatments; may suggest revision of treatment plan to better meet patient needs and capabilities.
  • Act as a resource to staff concerning occupational therapy programs.
  • Provide training to staff on the utilization of adaptive equipment necessary in the treatment of individuals, as well as the in the implementation and rationale of treatment plans.
  • Cleans and maintains treatment areas by cleaning and changing mats, changing linen, cleaning and refilling equipment, etc.
  • Follows sterile procedures and guidelines and ensures that all equipment is working properly and reports needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Assists in scheduling patients, preparation of daily schedules, and maintenance of daily census of occupational therapy patients.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the Mission, Purpose and Philosophy.

  • Utilizes material, equipment and time in a safe, beneficial, and cost-effective manner.
  • Organizes workload to complete responsibilities in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Observe infection control and standard precautions.
  • Participate in staff meetings, as needed.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No supervisory responsibilities.

 

Qualifications:

Education & Qualification Requirements:

Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate's degree in occupational therapy assistant from an accredited college.

Current license / registration by state of hire as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

 

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. The ability to write reports and business correspondence. Including but not limited to effectively present information, respond to questions from group of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range on intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

 

Physical Demands:

Able to lift up to 50 pounds, perform one-person transfer under routine and emergency situations, reposition a bedbound patient alone and able to sit, stand, bend stoop, kneel, pull, climb, reach, lift, and perform repetitive movements of the upper extremities.

May be exposed to unsanitary conditions in some facility or home settings.

May be exposed to high crime areas within the service community.
