What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Officer-Every Other Weekend Off position at Fond du Lac County, WI?
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Serves as a correctional officer on an assigned shift.
- Receives, fingerprints, photographs and books inmates as directed and assigns and escorts inmates to cells or designated areas.
- Supervises and inspects the work of inmates engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility.
- Issues uniforms, bedding and other supplies, and assists in the operation of the food service program as needed.
- Maintains observation of inmate attitude and behavior and reports accordingly to the Correctional Sergeant.
- Inspects and searches inmate quarters for contraband and any unauthorized or otherwise dangerous materials.
- Maintains discipline, employing force when necessary to quell disturbances and enforces facility rules and regulations ensuring inmate health and welfare.
- May transport inmates to activities, appointments and court.
- Maintains records as required and makes oral and written reports to insure that:
- Continuous around the clock communication between shifts is maintained.
- Inmates serve the correct amount of time and that their status is correct.
- Prisoner movements when accepted and released by the facility are properly recorded.
- Information is current and available for all other records necessary for the operation of the facility.
- Detects and assists investigators in illegal, criminal activities or violations of jail regulations.
- Issues Conduct Reports on inmates and reviews those reports with the Correctional Sergeant accordingly.
- Acts as staff advocate in disciplinary hearings as required.
- Provide clear and accurate court testimony.
- Supervises activities according to statutory requirements, Administrative Codes, Court Rulings and Jail Policy.
- Assists doctor(s)/nurse(s), with the medical needs/requests of inmates, to include emergency medical aid as required.
- Attend all required training and maintain all technical certifications.
- Exhibit acceptable skill levels in the operation and care of department equipment, in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Exhibit an acceptable level of mental and physical conditioning to meet the demand of potentially stressful, hazardous and dangerous situations.
- Reports necessary needs for maintenance and operational needs to the Correctional Sergeant.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Possession of high school diploma/GED.
- Associate Degree in Correctional/Police Science or a related field (desired).
- Completion of the Basic Jail Officer certification in the State of Wisconsin (desired).
- Previous experience in corrections or a related field.
- No felony convictions or any offense which would have a direct nexus to employment in the Sheriff's Office.
- Valid driver's license or other valid operator's permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
- CPR certification.
- Completion of required state certifications and any required updates.
- Free from any physical, emotional or mental conditions, which might adversely affect performance of duties as a correctional officer.
