What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Nursing Assistant position at Fond du Lac County?
The nursing assistant works under the supervision of the unit charge nurse, performing resident care duties and nonprofessional services that assist the residents in meeting their activities of daily living and functioning needs. By assisting the nurse in providing caring, quality resident care, this teamwork maximizes the residents' rehabilitation potential and creates a pleasant environment for them.
There are occasional positions available.
$2/hour shift differential for PM and NOC shift.
- Provides quality nursing care to residents under the general supervision of the unit/charge nurse, working cooperatively with other disciplines to ensure residents’ needs are met.
- Assists with resident cares and activities of daily living, addressing resident needs relative to bed mobility, range of motion, transfers, change of position, ambulation, locomotion, dressing, personal hygiene, and bathing.
- Answers call lights in an effort to address residents’ needs.
- Assists residents at mealtime, as well as with taking nourishment, and records intake.
- Assists residents with elimination needs, aiding in the collection of specimens as directed.
- Assists in applying protective devices, with nurse’s direction, and checking residents as indicated.
- Takes temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and weight of residents.
- Maintains precise, accurate, and complete charting of resident care.
- Observes, records, and reports resident changes, both physical and emotional, reporting significant resident findings promptly to unit/charge nurse.
- Reports concerns related to residents’ rights promptly to unit/charge nurse, nurse management, or a social worker.
- Fosters a safe and calm therapeutic environment, encouraging and assisting residents toward improved function, self-care, and independence, as they are capable.
- Labels and maintains an inventory of residents’ personal belongings. Assists residents with storing belongings.
- Performs housekeeping tasks related to resident care, including changing bed linens; collecting soiled linens; making beds; cleaning beds, bedside stands, and other furniture; straightening drawers and cupboards; cleaning up spills; and wiping off surfaces.
- Engages in one-on-one and group activities with residents.
- Escorts residents to appointments, activities, and outings as assigned.
- Ensures safety for residents and staff, reporting safety hazards and potential dangers to unit/charge nurse.
- Updates nursing assistant care cards and uses cards when reporting off-duty to nurse.
- Follows Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter DHS 132; federal regulations; facility policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; and standard infection control practices.
- Participates in educational offerings to ensure professional growth and development. Maintains required education, attending mandatory in-services and nursing assistant meetings.
Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of geriatric and chronically mentally ill populations. Must possess a willingness to work cooperatively with the nursing team, while maintaining a positive attitude. Must be organized and detail-oriented, with an ability to maintain confidentiality and prioritize duties in an environment with frequent interruptions. Must be self-directed in task completion and able to identify problems and resolve conflicts. Must possess exceptional communication skills, both orally and in writing, and be able to interact effectively with patients and families.
Understand written and spoken word, able to express thoughts in English language so others will understand. Able to perform duties in an atmosphere of frequent interruption in a timely manner. Perform duties in a stressful environment regarding resident physical and mental condition. Able to be self directed in task completion. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Registered as a state and federally certified nursing assistant. Or interested in becoming registered.
- Willingness to actively participate in in-service education classes.
- Must possess exceptional communication skills and willingness to work cooperatively with nursing team.
Fond du Lac County will pay for CNA certification.
