What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coding Specialist - Certified Professional position at Fond du Lac Reservation?
- Responsibilities: Evaluate health record documentation and charges to support accurate reimbursement for the services provided.
- Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Assist providers in assigning accurate Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and modifiers to patient encounters based on provider documentation.
Monitor coding workload and escalates delays, issues or missing documentation to the Billing Manager for appropriate resolution.
Provide coding education and physician documentation education based on review findings and trends.
Review, audit, and post charges electronically daily.
Adhere to quality and productivity standards to ensure coding compliance.
Regularly communicate with billing staff to reduce claim rejections and denials.
Submit completed encounters to the Patient Account Representative’s inbox to complete the billing.
Attend meetings with providers and support staff as requested.
Keep abreast of coding guidelines, NCCI guidelines, Medical Necessity, and NCD and LCDs.
Appropriate/Professional work attire is required.
Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.

Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Qualifications: High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Normal physical requirements.
Coding Certification through AHIMA or AAPC is required.
One-year coding physician services is required.
Knowledge of ICD-10, Health Care Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and CPT codes is required.
Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, data bases and/or data entry, Spreadsheets, and Microsoft Outlook is required.
Knowledge of Native American communities, culture, customs, and beliefs is preferred.
Experience working with Native Americans clients, communities and is able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.
