What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Studies/American Indian History Teacher position at Fond du Lac Reservation?
- Responsibilities: •Tribal Nations: Evaluate the unique political status, trust relationships and governing structures of sovereign Tribal Nations and the United States.
•Treaty Rights: Teach and apply historical perspective and modern realities regarding the Ojibwe Peoples treaty with the United States government. Encourage understanding and historical perspectives regarding treaties.
•Civic Skills: Apply civic reasoning and demonstrate civic skills for the purpose of informed and engaged lifelong civic participation.
•Governmental Institutions and Political Processes: Explain and evaluate processes, rules, and laws of United States governmental institutions at local, state, and federal levels and within Tribal Nations.
•Public Policy: Analyze how public policy is shaped by governmental and non-governmental institutions. Analyze how people and communities take action to solve problems and shape public policy.
•Historical Perspectives: Identify diverse points of view and describe how one’s frame of reference influences historical perspective.
•Identity: Analyze the ways power and language construct the social identities of race, religion, geography, ethnicity, and gender. Apply these understandings to one’s own social identities and other groups living in Minnesota, centering those whose stories and histories have been marginalized, erased, or ignored.
•Resistance: Describe how individuals and communities have fought for freedom and liberation against systemic and coordinated exercises of power locally and globally. Identify strategies or times that have resulted in lasting change. Organize with others to engage in activities that could further the rights and dignity of all.
•Ways of Knowing and Methodologies: Use ethnic and Indigenous studies methods and sources to understand the roots of contemporary systems of oppression and apply lessons from the past that could eliminate historical and contemporary injustices.
•Instructs students in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
•Adapts Social Studies material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
•Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids appropriate to the interests and maturity levels of students; maintain required inventory records.
•Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of individual student.
•Develops an understanding of the contributions of racial, religious, and political groups to American culture.
•Develops knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education, and living standards.
•Encourages students to become aware of and demonstrate the complexity and inter-relations of local, state, national and world problems.
•Encourage students to think independently and express original ideas.
•Evaluates each student’s progress in Social Studies knowledge and skills.
•Establish and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
•Communicates in an appropriate manner with parents and school counselors to discuss student progress.
•Maintain accurate daily records of student performance, attendance and periodic grading.
•Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
•Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
•Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
•Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
•Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult child interactions.
•Maintains a professional relationship with all staff and community members.
•Maintains professional standards toward creating confidential relationships with all program participants and staff.
•Routine classroom cleaning/maintenance to ensure a safe, clean, and secure learning environment for all students.
•Participates in all education programs including local and regional in-service training, advisory committee, and community education meetings and staff meetings as directed.
•Provides weekly lesson plans to the Building Principal that incorporate Minnesota State Standards.
•Develop a course syllabus for all Social Studies/American Indian History classes.
•Appropriate work attire is required.
•Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
•Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
•Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems. Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
•Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
•Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
•Maintains a clean and organized work area.
•Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
- Qualifications: •No Driver’s License Required.
•Appropriate Minnesota certification is required.
•Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, data bases and/or data entry, spreadsheets and Microsoft Outlook is required.
•Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
•Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
•Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
•Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
•Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
•Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
•Some travel may be required.
