Position Title: Class A CDL Driver
Supported by: Transportation Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

In Short:
The Driver-Class A CDL will support the Food Bank for the Heartland (FBFH) mission to reduce food insecurity by overseeing the operational aspects of fleet operations. This role will support logistical cooperation between multiple departments. In addition, this role is accountable for achieving operational results by supporting departmental strategies and specific objectives in alignment with FBFH’s strategic plan.

Your Mission:
  • As a Class A CDL Driver, your primary responsibility will be to provide timely and accurate deliveries to our agency and program partners as designated by transportation manifests. In the event of unforeseen circumstances that may require advanced or delayed delivery times, your communication with partners will be crucial in allowing them to make the necessary adjustments.
  • Use delivery tickets to accurately load and unload trucks, including all dry, frozen, and cooled products.
  • Follow FBFH guidelines as delineated in the FBFH Agency Manual and as communicated by the Transportation Manager.
  • Ensure excellent customer service to agency partners, providing timely, attentive, upbeat service. Ensure customer needs are met in a manner that reflects positively on FBFH. Promptly report any concerns about agency partner performance to leadership or designated Community and Partner Support Representative.
  • Provide timely pick-up from retail, producer, and manufacturing donors. Ensure excellent customer service and promote FBFH with food donors.
  • Promote and demonstrate FBFH's mission and values to stakeholders and communities.
  • Follow all driving and hauling rules of the Department of Transportation and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Immediately report any accidents or incidents of violation to FBFH.
  • Accurately complete paperwork for all donated products. Ensure ongoing communication with the receiving department to process donated food accurately and timely.
  • Complete and document all food and vehicle safety checks, including, but not limited to, daily digital pick-up logs, temperature logs, and daily transportation checklists.
  • Complete and document any additional Department of Transportation-regulated manifests and paperwork.
  • Support the transportation department's workload by assisting other drivers in loading or unloading unassigned trucks as needed or when requested.
  • Keep your assigned vehicle clean and maintained inside and out. Clean out the interior of the vehicle daily, disposing of any trash. Ensure regular exterior cleaning of vehicles to represent and promote the FBFH brand.
  • Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of the vehicle and all equipment. Report any equipment or vehicle issues to your immediate supervisor.
  • Other duties entrusted within your scope of practice.




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Commitment to the FBFH mission and values
  • Strong ability to drive commercial trucks from 16 to 53 feet long
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills focusing on relationship-building, listening, and support.
  • Ability to consistently commit to trustworthiness, dependability, and reliability.

Your Story:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relatable experience.
  • A Valid CDL, Class A license, and medical card required.
  • Forklift, dolly, and pallet jack experience is preferred.
  • Warehouse experience is preferred.

This role is a member of the Transportation Team at the Food Bank for The Heartland. The team works closely with all Operations Teams.

The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a warehouse environment and out in the community, making deliveries and picking up donations. This role routinely uses standard warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and forklifts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees must be able to work in cold environments, including coolers and freezers. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to working near moving mechanical parts.

Pre-employment and random drug screening are required by the DOT and DMV. It may require weekend and overnight work. Occasional severe weather and challenging road conditions. Expensive driving of commercial trucks from 16 to 53 feet in length.
