Summary
Food Matters Market Meat Dept is a full service department. The Meat Department Butcher / Cutter provides prompt, friendly, helpful, well-informed assistance to customers with sales of fresh natural meat, poultry and seafood to meet department goals. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Assist customers with product questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
- Offer suggestions for purchases and ways to use products.
- Perform basic cuts on poultry and seafood and wrap meat to order.
- Take special orders for customers.
- Maintain fully stocked, attractive displays to give impression of abundance and quality, while maintaining proper storage conditions.
- Clearly and accurately label items with price tags or signs as needed.
- Report customer suggestions, comments, complaints to Meat Department Manager.
II. DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE
- Ability to cut and merchandise entire meat case following established priorities and standards for appearance, size, weight and wrap.
- Stock for next shift.
- Pull low-quality items, record and dispose of them following established procedures.
- Keep coolers, food prep and storage areas in clean, sanitary condition, meeting health department standards:
- Take out trash.
- Scrub and rinse blocks, floors, walls, cases and equipment following established procedures.
- Use equipment safely. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures. Advise Department Manager of equipment repair or replacement needs.
- Receive as needed: Check deliveries for damage, quality and accuracy, notify Department Manager of discrepancies. Rotate deliveries into storage.
Requirements
Education, Credentials, Certification, and/or Experience
- 2 years’ retail sales, preferable in the grocery store business, preferred.
- 2 years’ experience in a meat and seafood store environment, preferred.
- SafeServ Certification, preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must maintain the highest level of customer service at all times.
- Ability to adapt to the ever-changing high volume retail while working in a cross-functional team environment.
- Must have the capacity to take initiative when problems arise.
- Flexibility to adapt in a variety of situations.
- Must have advanced attention to detail with the capability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
- Must be familiar with Health Department guidelines and regulations as they pertain to a grocery retail environment.
- Efficient planning and ability to execute for results.
- Must have the ability to analyze and create action plans for financial statements.
- Excellent written communication and documentation skills.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills for dealing cross functionally with peers and senior management.
- Must be able to lead, support and contribute to team goals.
Working Environment
This position is exposed to dust, noise, and temperature extremes. There are possible equipment movement hazards; electrical shock, and exposure to chemicals and solvents. This is a fast-paced work environment.

- Must be able to physically perform light work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
- Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distance of less than 20 inches and more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, and field of vision.
