Job Title : Special Education Teacher - Intellectual Disorder Classroom
Reports To : School Principal and Special Education Coordinator Employment Status : Full-Time Location : Central Iowa School Districts
Job Summary : The Special Education Teacher for the Intellectual Disorder (ID) classroom is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing individualized instructional programs tailored to meet the unique academic, social, and functional needs of students with intellectual disabilities. This role involves creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, collaborating with families and staff, and fostering student independence and growth.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction and Curriculum Development :
- Develop and deliver individualized lesson plans aligned with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and state standards.
- Modify curriculum to accommodate diverse learning styles, developmental levels, and functional needs.
- Use evidence-based teaching strategies, including hands-on activities, assistive technology, and visual supports.
Classroom Management and Environment :
Create a structured, predictable, and engaging classroom environment that promotes safety and positive behavior.Implement positive behavior intervention support plans (PBIS) and de-escalation techniques when necessary.Provide consistent routines and use visual schedules to support student understanding and transitions.Assessment and Progress Monitoring :
Conduct functional and academic assessments to evaluate students' strengths, needs, and progress.Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals using data-driven methods.Collaborate with the IEP team to review and update goals and strategies as needed.Collaboration and Communication :
Work closely with general education teachers, related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists), and paraprofessionals to provide cohesive support.Maintain regular communication with families to share progress, strategies, and resources.Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and team planning sessions.Support for Daily Living Skills :
Teach and reinforce life skills, such as personal care, communication, social interactions, and self-advocacy.Provide supervision and support during meal times, bathroom routines, and other activities of daily living as needed.Foster independence by teaching strategies for problem-solving and decision-making.Professional Development and Compliance :
Stay updated on best practices, instructional methods, and legal requirements related to special education.Ensure compliance with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and other state / federal regulations.Maintain accurate records of IEPs, progress reports, and other documentation.Qualifications
Education and Certification :
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.Valid Iowa Teaching License with appropriate special education endorsements (e.g., Instructional Strategist I or II). Strategist II Endorsement PreferredExperience and Skills :
Experience working with students with intellectual disabilities or developmental delays (preferred).Knowledge of IEP development, implementation, and compliance.Strong classroom management and organizational skills.Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with students, families, and colleagues.Ability to use adaptive and assistive technology to support student learning.Physical and Emotional Requirements :
Ability to support students with physical needs, such as lifting or transferring, if applicable.Patience, empathy, and resilience to work in a challenging and rewarding environment.Work Environment :
The Special Education Teacher will work primarily in a classroom setting, with opportunities for collaboration in shared spaces and participation in field trips or community-based instruction. The role may involve physical activity and exposure to a variety of behaviors related to students' needs.
