Responsibilities
The Opportunity
The Chief Engineer, Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineering will report to the Executive Director, Battery Industrialization. The Chief Engineer will lead the Battery Cell Advanced Engineering Team and will lead the Industrialization of the cell plant in Marshall, MI. In this manufacturing engineering role, you will work actively on Industrialization of cell and module factories with a diverse, multi-functional global team. You will have the opportunity to create, lead, and manage the Battery Manufacturing Engineering teams to plan, engineer and launch manufacturing systems.

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for building the team and creating the processes and systems to meet the projected capacities, performance attributes and quality metrics to ensure that enterprise goals are achieved.

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for building the team and creating the processes and systems to meet the projected capacities, performance attributes and quality metrics to ensure that enterprise goals are achieved.
- Work with Product Engineering, Purchasing and Suppliers to deliver manufacturing feasibility and simultaneous engineering of new Cell and Module products and facilities through Simultaneous Engineering and Launch Phases.
- Lead innovation and technology projects for battery manufacturing.
- Work with purchase and product engineering on engineering specifications (ES) for battery electrode raw materials and processing.
- Determine battery manufacturing processes.
- Lead implementation of battery manufacturing quality control strategies.
- Provide guidance to purchasing for outsourced components/assemblies, related to battery manufacturing process and testing procedures.
- Coordinate efforts regarding pass through characteristics and quality metrics with larger multi-functional team.
- Update and maintain bill of process (BOP) and methods documents for Battery manufacturing and test processes.
- Review Battery quality indicators (e.g. electrode quality, Formation test, Warranty, etc.) and evaluate potential enhancements to address issue.
- Develop new processing methods to improve cost and quality.
- Secure Ford intellectual property for processing methods, tooling, or algorithms
- Utilize institutional knowledge to implement standardization & continuous improvement. Benchmark to drive excellence and efficiency.
- Utilize Lessons Learned /Continuous Improvement Process from CATL with STA, Product, and Operations
- Drive Simultaneous Engineering activities, cost studies and investment efficiency activities to meet BOSK targets.
- Develop Resource Requirements- Hire and assign resources to support new JV and business objectives.
- Provide technical expertise as required (ex. Facilities, Quality, Industrial Engineering, etc.).
- Provide plant assistance to support launch support requests and extraordinary needs w/existing cell suppliers.
- Assess employee competencies and support Individual Development Plans; conduct training classes on various topics as required.
- Lead, mentor, coach, counsel, recognize and motivate employees.
- The selected candidate should be willing to travel extensively to Ford/JV plants including travel between NA, EU and Asia.
Qualifications
The minimum requirements we seek
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering or related field.
- Proven track record (8 years) of success in automotive, battery or other electromechanical manufacturing leadership experience.
- A collaborative leadership style to influence and build meaningful relationships with SK, JV and Ford executives.
- Understanding/experience of overall automotive business (EV/Hybrid/ICE) and manufacturing business acumen.
- Ability to inspire and motivate our technology and engineering teams by leveraging emerging technologies, best in class manufacturing systems and safety processes as well as champion Ford's leadership behaviors to shape a lean high performing culture to ensure Ford and BME remains a workplace of choice now and into the future.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire, mentor, and empower a diverse team of engineers and professionals.
