Associate Vice President for Strategy and Operations

Role Overview

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Strategy and Operations plays a critical leadership role within the division of Student Affairs and collaborates with the Student Affairs senior management team to advance the strategic direction, vision, and goals of the Division of Student Affairs.

This role leads efforts in strategic planning and assessment, marketing & communications, project management, risk management, and policy development, ensuring alignment with Fordham’s mission and values. The AVP will develop and execute communication strategies that elevate the division’s impact, foster meaningful engagement, and promote positive student experiences. This position will advance and enhance the student experience across all levels of the institution, with a particular focus on graduate students.

The position is based at the Lincoln Center campus but has responsibilities across all Fordham campuses. The position requires regular travel to the Rose Hill / Bronx campus and often requires evening and weekend work.

Essential Functions

  • Designs, implements, and manages a comprehensive strategic planning process for Student Affairs.
  • Leads the development, execution, and continuous improvement of strategic initiatives. Provides guidance to departments on strategic planning, goal setting, and execution.
  • Utilizes data and assessment results to drive decision-making, performance improvement, and innovation within the division.
  • Collaborates with key campus stakeholders to ensure alignment of student affairs strategic initiatives with broader institutional goals and priorities.
  • Manages complex, multi-departmental projects, ensuring effective coordination across units.
  • In collaboration with University Marketing and Communications, designs, implements, and maintains a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to promote student engagement and enhance and elevate visibility.
  • Oversees internal and external communications, including social media, newsletters, websites, and other marketing materials. Develops clear, impactful messaging for various internal and external audiences.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the performance and effectiveness of communications and strategic initiatives to inform decision-making.
  • Designs and manages a division-wide approach to policy development and publications, including University Regulations and divisional handbooks. Maintains a shared library of standard policies and processes.
  • Oversees risk management and develops consistent processes and standards to assess risk and develop mitigation strategies, including assisting the Vice President in working with Legal Counsel.
  • Develops and implements a shared project management system to provide consultation support, improve efficiency and track progress.
  • Collaborates with the graduate and professional school deans, academic departments, faculty, and students to improve the graduate student experience, coordinating quality service and support for graduate students.

Management Responsibilities

Provides strategic leadership and supervises others who supervise. Responsible for hiring, training, developing, managing performance, administering corrective action, makes compensation decisions and for managing strategic views at a high level.

Additional Functions

  • Serves on University-wide committees and task forces as needed.
  • Serves as main liaison with Information Technology areas for Student Affairs.
  • Oversees divisional committees and working groups.
  • Required Qualifications : Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, counseling, or student affairs.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in student affairs. Minimum of 7 years in a managerial role.

  • Strong strategic planning skills, with the ability to develop and execute innovative programs and initiatives that are distinctive and enhance the student experience at Fordham.
  • Experience in communications, messaging, and marketing to the diverse constituencies of higher education, particularly students but also staff, faculty, internal and external media, alumni, and families and parents.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the ability to partner with staff, students, faculty, parents, alumni, and administrators with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail and strong familiarity with information technology and project management.
  • Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple, ongoing, and complex tasks.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Fordham’s mission as a Jesuit and Catholic University.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in student affairs at the senior management level.
  • Experience working with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students is strongly preferred.
  • Salary Information

    Minimum Starting Salary : $185,000

    Maximum Starting Salary : $225,000

    Note : Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
