The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 166 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.
The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure, and recreation of its citizens.
Job Summary
The district places an emphasis on the preservation of natural history and education for future generations. The Mayslake Peabody Estate offers a unique opportunity to connect natural and human history. This position provides support in managing the district's artifact collection and assists in the preparation of exhibits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Research the background of artifacts.
- Assist in the collection, maintenance, cleaning, photography, and storing of artifacts.
- Enter data in data collection and contact management system.
- Assist in the preparation of exhibits including pulling and installing artifacts.
- Keeping attention to detail in all job-related tasks and record keeping.
- Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of District's safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
- Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrates a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in archeology, museum management, humanities, natural history, or a similarly related field is preferred.
- Valid Driver's License in good standing.
- Working knowledge of PastPerfect museum software preferred.
- Previous historical artifact research preferred.
- Basic knowledge of photography.
- Experience working with artifacts and installing exhibits preferred.
- Time management skills.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Building and maintaining effective relationships.
- Keeping neat and accurate records.
- Experience working with database systems preferred.
Schedule: Preferred start date is 3/5/25 - 9/3/25. Schedule varies bast on need but mainly Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Pay: $15 - $20 per hour.
Work Environment: Working primarily indoors at the Mayslake Peabody estate. Will involve frequent use of a ladder and the ability to climb stairs. The site is currently and periodically under construction resulting in contact with dust, construction equipment, and loud noise.
Location: Mayslake Peabody Estate Forest Preserve in Oak Brook, IL.
