The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 160 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.
The district's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure, and recreation of its citizens.
Job Summary
This position assists the maintenance and construction tradespeople within the Facilities Management team by performing maintenance on District buildings, structures, and amenities within district preserves.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist tradespeople on projects and repairs throughout the district related to painting, carpentry, excavation, signage, masonry, and fence, bridge and other infrastructure repair.
• Operate hand and power tools including hammers, saws, brushes, shovels, and drills.
• Operate District motor vehicles including vans, pickup trucks, and ATVs.
• Perform organization and housekeeping duties in the Facilities Management shop.
• Assist in the loading and unloading of materials and equipment from District vehicles.
• Perform landscape maintenance duties using a lawn mower, string trimmer, and hand tools.
• Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the district's safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
• Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
• Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
• 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
• Valid Class D Driver's License in good standing.
• Previous equipment and tool use experience in a trade, construction, or maintenance role preferred.
• Proficiency with basic hand tools and common power tools.
• Familiarity with safety practices and personal protective equipment used in trade work.
Schedule: Position starts May 1st. Hours are Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM.
Pay: $16-18/hour.
Work Environment: Requires working indoors and outdoors. Exposure to all weather conditions, insects and other wildlife, vegetation (poison ivy), and sharp objects. Requires use of motorized equipment including power tools.
Other Information: Safety boots are required with a $225 reimbursement available (returning seasonal employees qualify for reimbursement every 2 years). All other PPE is provided.
