Position Overview :

Forest & Tree seeks a passionate and experienced Director of Outdoor Learning to coordinate and implement nature-based educational programming in collaboration with Oakland and Richmond schools and organizations. This role involves coordinating outdoor day and potential overnight trips for multiple Oakland elementary and middle schools, fostering connections between students, nature, and their communities.

This seasonal position begins in January 2025 and runs through June 2025, providing TK-8th grade students with hands-on, engaging outdoor education that supports their academic, social, emotional, and physical development.

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) has provided state funding for afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through eighth grade. “Expanded learning” means before school, after school, summer, or intersession learning programs that focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of pupils through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. It is the intent of the Legislature that expanded learning programs are pupil-centered, results-driven, include community partners, and complement learning activities in the regular school day and school year.

Key Responsibilities :

Program Design & Coordination

  • Design and implement nature-based educational programming for Oakland and Richmond schools, focusing on day and overnight trips.
  • Develop and deliver outdoor curricula that integrate environmental stewardship, science, arts, and outdoor skills.
  • Organize and lead off-site field trips to regional and state parks, ensuring alignment with school and community goals.

Staff Management & Development

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate program staff.
  • Provide professional development for staff focused on outdoor education, health, safety, and emergency protocols.
  • Partnerships & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, park agencies, and other partners to enhance programming.
  • Act as a liaison between Forest & Tree, Oakland and Richmond schools, families, and external stakeholders.
  • Administrative & Compliance

  • Oversee attendance reporting, progress monitoring, and program evaluation.
  • Develop systems for assessing program effectiveness and report regularly to school leaders and stakeholders.
  • Manage program budget and ensure compliance with funding guidelines.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

    Experience

  • Minimum five years of teaching, administrative, or outdoor education experience.
  • Proven experience in curriculum design, particularly for after school or enrichment programs.
  • Outdoor and community-based educational leadership.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
  • Education : Bachelor’s degree preferred in education, environmental studies, or a related field.

  • Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to work outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
  • Capability to transport and carry materials and equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Local travel required to field trip sites and partner locations.
  • Additional Requirements

  • TB and fingerprinting clearance required prior to working with students.
  • Position Type, Hours and Compensation :

    Contract Type : Part-time, seasonal (January 2025 – June 2025).

  • Compensation : Competitive, commensurate with experience.
