Position Overview:
The GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Specialist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and analyzing spatial data to support mapping, planning, and operational decision-making. This role involves working with GIS software, databases, and tools to create detailed maps, conduct spatial analysis, and provide data-driven support across departments.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Management & Mapping:
- Collects, organizes, and manages spatial and attribute data from various sources including GPS, field surveys, and public datasets.
- Creates, updates, and maintains GIS databases, shapefiles, layers, and metadata.
- Develops and produces a variety of custom maps and visualizations for internal use, reports, or presentations.
Spatial Analysis & Reporting:
- Performs spatial analysis to support operational planning, resource management, infrastructure development, or environmental monitoring.
- Conducts proximity, overlay, and network analyses to support specific projects or inquiries.
- Prepares reports, charts, and dashboards based on spatial data and trends.
Technical Support & Collaboration:
- Provides technical GIS support and training to staff across departments.
- Collaborates with engineers, planners, field crews, or analysts to ensure accurate data capture and effective use of GIS.
- Troubleshoots GIS-related issues and ensures data accuracy and consistency.
Software & System Development:
- Works with ESRI products (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online), GPS devices, and related tools.
- Develops or maintains web-based GIS applications, dashboards, or mobile data collection tools (e.g., Survey123, Collector).
- Assists with integrating GIS data into other systems (e.g., asset management or work order systems).
Required Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency with GIS software, especially ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online).
- Familiarity with GPS data collection tools and mobile mapping apps.
- Strong understanding of spatial analysis techniques and cartographic principles.
- Ability to work with relational databases (e.g., SQL, Access) and manage large datasets.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Working Conditions:
