Position Overview
The CNC Application Engineer will be responsible for creating, optimizing and enhancing the performance of CNC machining processes through effective tooling design and selection. This role involves collaborating with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure efficient and accurate CNC operations while focusing on improving tooling performance, process efficiency, and product quality. The Process Engineer will also work to reduce cycle times, tool wear, and overall operational costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Tooling Design & Optimization: Develop and optimize tooling solutions for CNC machining processes, ensuring high precision, performance, and durability.
- Process Improvement: Analyze existing CNC machining processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce tooling costs, and increase machine uptime.
- Tool Selection & Maintenance: Evaluate and select the appropriate cutting tools and materials for various machining operations, ensuring longevity and precision.
- CNC Program Optimization: Work closely with CNC programmers to refine and optimize G-code for more efficient tool paths, reduced cycle times, and improved surface finishes.
- Cost Reduction: Identify opportunities to reduce tooling costs through improved tool management, regrinding programs, and better tool utilization.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Diagnose machining issues related to tooling, setup, or CNC programs and implement corrective actions to improve production quality and reduce downtime.
- Collaboration: Partner with production teams, CNC operators, and quality control to implement best practices in tooling and machining processes.
- Process Documentation: Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation related to CNC tooling and machining processes.
- Training: Provide training and technical support to machine operators and production staff on tooling selection, proper usage, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate's degree in manufacturing engineering, Machine Tool Technology or a Manufacturing process related field.
- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in CNC machining, tooling design, and process engineering in a manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, CNC programming (G-code, M-code), and tooling selection. Familiarity with tooling design, CNC machine operation, and machining center setup. ISO 9001 standardized requirements.
- Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot tooling and machining issues.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and deliver on deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced CNC machine tools, including 5-axis machining.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with tool regrinding and tool life optimization.
- Understanding of different materials, including metals and composites, and their machining properties.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and work with tools and machinery safely.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay Range: $60,000-$100,000
