Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Engineer to optimize the design and manufacturability for our balance of plant conversion equipment. You will take some of the initial, groundbreaking embodiments of our multi-day energy storage system design and scale them for manufacturability, cost and reliability. As a seasoned engineer, you will produce complex 3D models and detailed mechanical prints with all specifications and callouts for a product that can survive and thrive. Your designs will be mindful of all requirements in play throughout shipping, installation, operational lifetime, and service at our project sites. Alongside our world-class supply chain team, you will drive decisions on what components should be made-to-spec or off-the-shelf and spearhead vendor relationships - from exploring new strategic partnerships to owning releases and engineering changes in our product lifecycle management system. This role will also showcase your ability to independently organize engineering documentation and requirements needed to interface with our BMS Electronics and Project Engineering teams. This is an exciting opportunity to move some serious power at a company focused on creating a reliable and fully renewable electric grid year-round!

What you'll do :

  • Design made-to-spec parts that are specific to the battery requirements, including busbar, disconnect, and contactor assemblies, wireways, cable supports, thermal management systems, and industrial structures such as skids or sleds
  • Perform or coordinate the mechanical and structural analyses involved in seismic, wind, transportation, and snow load compliance, in addition to defining the robust mechanical mates and framing provisions to actually survive them
  • Prepare detailed 2D prints and written documentation with specifications ranging from paint, galvanization, plating or other surface treatment - to datums and tolerances relevant for a vendor to deliver parts of acceptable quality at the best value
  • Leverage common materials and fabrication processes, creative insights, and close collaboration with vendors to deliver the lowest equipment landed cost without compromising quality and performance
  • Integrate or design liquid processing systems consisting of valves, solenoids, heat trace and flowmeters for distribution of fluids from the plant to subsystems within and around the equipment
  • Produce clear engineering documentation for production use at vendor sites, as well as internal use by teams at Form. This includes descriptive mechanical CAD drawings of panel layouts, busbars and circuit spacings, as well as electrical single- and multi-line drawings, conduit schedules and cable assemblies
  • Coordinate the release of drawings and bills of materials through Solidworks PDM and Arena PLM, and flag long lead-time items to our sourcing team to explore alternatives or risk buys
  • Support other aspects of the power conversion system design, test and release process and grow as team and product needs evolve

What you'll bring :

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and 7 years of experience in design of industrial equipment
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and structural design fundamentals, and ability to perform simulations, analyses and relevant measurements as required to support design verification
  • Diverse 3D CAD experience, ranging from objects such as machined parts and sheet metal to flexible hoses, wire routing and harness diagrams, and electrical panels
  • Experience producing mechanical drawings in SolidWorks, with specific attention to notes, datums, details, tolerances and other information pertaining to manufacturing and assembly processes
  • Hands-on experience with the equipment you have designed. While prototyping will not always be required, you will have a deep understanding of how hands, hoists and machines will be manipulating your design at every stage of the lifecycle.
  • Ability to drill down costs with an existing design and vendor, whether it means evaluating alternates, ripping up existing assumptions or zooming in on design details down to fabrication instructions and pathways to the final product
  • A knowledge of how to build large equipment assemblies. Skids, sleds and electrical cabinets should be familiar territory.
  • Discipline designing and anticipating how others will work around high-voltage (1500 V) and high-current (>
  • 2 kA); experience with UL 1741, UL 805, NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E a plus

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain design decisions, summarize observations, and absorb information and requirements from other teams
  • LI-Onsite
