Job Description
The perfusionist plays a critical role in the cardiovascular department, responsible for the safe and effective performance of extracorporeal circulation functions. They must be knowledgeable about various equipment available to support cardiopulmonary and circulatory functions, selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques in consultation with the physician.
Key Responsibilities
- Selecting and operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical situations where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary/circulatory function.
- Maintaining proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring variables.
- Communicating and interacting with patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Assisting supervising physicians with consults for purposes of gathering information and formulating an immediate action plan.
Schedule Information
Be available for call as appropriate. Perform perfusionist duties for scheduled cardiovascular cases as well as stand by when needed.
Additional Duties
The perfusionist is responsible for various tasks including but not limited to:
- Extracorporeal circulation/cardiopulmonary support.
- Counter pulsation.
- Circulatory support ventricular assistance.
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
- Blood Conversation techniques/autotransfusion-sequestering of autologous blood products.
- Myocardial preservation.
- Anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis.
- Physiological monitoring/analysis.
- Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring/analysis.
- Induction of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversal.
- Hemodilution.
- Administration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit.
- Documentation associated with described duties.
- Preparing platelet gel or fibrin glue.
- Isolated limb/organ perfusion.
- Surgical assistance.
- Inserting intravenous and intra-arterial catheters, cardioplegia and/or defibrillation when indicated according to approved technique and procedure under supervision.
- Cleaning and maintenance of all cardiac perfusion equipment.
- Maintaining sufficient inventory of cardiac perfusion supplies for volume of procedures.
- Sharing knowledge and skills with others on a formal and informal basis.
- Adhering to established policies, procedures, precautions, and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care.
